Solution Spraying of Poly(methyl methacrylate) Blends to Fabricate Micro-textured, Superoleophobic Surfaces
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe a simple technique to prepare superhydrophobic and superoleophobic micro-textured surfaces by spray coating a blend of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and the low surface energy molecule 1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (fluorodecyl POSS, γsv ≈ 10 mN/m) using an air brush with a pressurized nitrogen stream. Scanning electron micrographs show the formation of micro-textured surfaces possessing re-entrant curvature; a critical feature for obtaining liquid repellency with low surface tension liquids. The surface morphology can be tuned systematically from a corpuscular or spherical microstructure to a beads-on-string structure and finally to bundled fibers by controlling the solution concentration and molecular weight of the sprayed polymer. The oleophobicity of the resulting structures is characterized by advancing and receding contact angle measurements with liquids of a range of surface tensions. *Manuscript Click here to view linked References

Exploring Plastron Stability and Fluid Friction Reduction on Robust Micro-Textured Non-Wetting Surfaces
Non-wetting surfaces are characterized by the presence of stable pockets of vapor trapped within the asperities of the surface morphology. The utility of these surfaces in reducing skin friction in viscous laminar and turbulent flows is experimentally and theoretically investigated and is the main focus of this thesis. The development of a surface coating that reduces fluid drag can potentially...
متن کاملMicrostructured Polymer Blend Surfaces Produced by Spraying Functional Copolymers and Their Blends
We described the fabrication of functional and microstructured surfaces from polymer blends by spray deposition. This simple technique offers the possibility to simultaneously finely tune the microstructure as well as the surface chemical composition. Whereas at lower polymer concentration, randomly distributed surface micropatterns were observed, an increase of the concentration leads to signi...
متن کاملDenture base polymers, poly methyl methacrylate improved using free radical copolymerization
Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the most common material used in Prosthodontics. Several studies indicate a breakdown of the number of very high resin bases after 2 to 3 years to avoid breaking bass and several attempts have been made, such as altering the chemical structure of resin by adding causes cross linking or copolymerization. The innovative method for improving the physical properti...
متن کاملInterfacial segregation in polymer blends driven by acid-base interactions.
Infrared-visible sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) was used to measure the interfacial concentrations of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/polystyrene (PS) blends next to a sapphire substrate. The acid-base interactions of carbonyl groups of PMMA with the hydroxyl groups on the sapphire drive the interfacial segregation of PMMA next to the sapphire substrate. Using the shift of sapphir...
