Navigation in hypertext: A critical review of the concept

چکیده
With the advent of hypertext it has become widely accepted that the departure from the so-called " linear " structure of paper increases the likelihood of readers or users becoming lost. In this paper we will discuss this aspect of hypertext in terms of its validity, the lessons to be learned from the psychology of navigation and the applicability of the navigation metaphor to the hypertext domain. 1. IS NAVIGATION A PROBLEM? There is a striking consensus among many of the " experts " in the field that navigation is the single greatest difficulty for users of hypertext. Frequent reference is made to " getting lost in hyperspace " (e.g. Conklin 1987, McAleese 1989), and Hammond and Allinson (1989) speak for many when they say: " Experience with using hypertext systems has revealed a number of problems for users..... First, users get lost... Second, users may find it difficult to gain an overview of the material... Third, even if users know specific information is present they may have difficulty finding it " (p294). In the following section we will discuss what is known about the psychology of navigation in physical environments and show how this might have relevance to the 'virtual' worlds of information space. Individuals possess schemata or models of the physical environment in which they find themselves. This is acquired from experience and affords a basic orienting frame of reference for navigatory purposes. Thus, we soon acquire schemata of towns and cities so that we know what to expect when we find ourselves in one: busy roads, numerous buildings, shopping, residential and industrial areas, many people, churches, pubs, etc. According to Downs and Stea (1977) such frames of reference exist at all levels of scale

Hypertext and Learning: an Overview
Despite the vast and rich panorama of hypertext research, to date there are still no clear definitions of what hypertext really is. Classical references describe the concept "hypertext" as a non-linear way of thinking, reading, and accessing the information which is best done on the computer screen. This paper shows the present situation where hypertext is seen as the interaction between the le...
متن کاملImproving Navigation and Learning in Hypertext Environments With Navigable Concept Maps
In this paper, we have discussed the design of CoMPASS and the theoretical foundations that it is based on. CoMPASS is a hypertext system that presents students with external, graphical representations in the form of concept maps as well as textual representations both of which change dynamically as students traverse through the domain and make navigational decisions. In a study in which middle...
متن کاملHypermedia Navigation Concepts for Lecture Recordings
This paper introduces a complete hypermedia navigation concept for lecture recordings, along with virtPresenter, a prototype software tool for automatic generation of hypermedia user interfaces for lecture recordings. A special focus is on how navigation concepts of hypertext have to be modified in order to work with continuous media.
متن کاملInfluence of 1 Running head: PASSIVE VS. ACTIVE ACCESS TO HYPERTEXT Influence of passive versus active information access to hypertextual information resources on cognitive and emotional parameters
Learning with non-linear media has been one of the most prevalent topics in educational computing research during the last two decades. The present study examines the influence of navigation in hypertext learning environments and discusses advantages and disadvantages of hypertext as instructional media. Results suggest that subjects retrieving information by actively navigating hypertext do no...
متن کاملSpace - the Final Chapter or Why Physical Representations are not Semantic Intentions
The term ‘hypertext’ evokes many images (e.g., nodes and links, semantic webs, nonlinear access and so forth) but perhaps one of the most common is that of users struggling to find their way around a complex information space. As a result, navigation has become a subject of great interest to many researchers in the field. In this chapter we will discuss navigation through hypertext in terms of ...
