Origin of groundwater salinity and hydrogeochemical processes in the confined Quaternary aquifer of the Pearl River Delta, China

چکیده
The Pearl River Delta (PRD), located in the coastal area of South China, contains a large confined Quaternary aquifer. This aquifer has been identified to have high concentrations of total dissolved solids–ranging from 1 g/l in the inland area to 26.8 g/l near the southeast shoreline. This work aims to investigate the origin of groundwater salinity and the major hydrogeochemical processes controlling the groundwater evolution in the confined basal aquifer of the PRD. A total of 40 boreholes were drilled in the PRD during 2007–2009, and groundwater samples were collected for major ion (Ca; Mg; Na; K; NH4 ; Cl ; SO 4 and HCO 3 ) and isotope (d O, dH, H, dC and C) analyses. These analyses demonstrate that groundwater in the confined basal aquifer is recharged by local rainwater and seawater, and seawater is the major salinity source for groundwater. The contribution of seawater varies from less than 1% in the inland areas to 74% near the shoreline. SO 4 reduction andmethanogenesis occur in this reducing confined aquifer. The results of ion exchange show that Mg exchanges mainly with the NH4 ion, which is derived from the mineralization of sedimentary organic matter. Ion exchange between Na and Ca and groundwater facies suggest that the brackish aquifer in the northwest inland area is undergoing freshening. H analysis suggests that infiltrated rainwater is younger than seawater. C analysis indicates that the seawater most likely infiltrated into the confined basal aquifer during the Holocene transgression period. 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Contribution of the aquitard to the regional groundwater hydrochemistry of the underlying confined aquifer in the Pearl River Delta, China.
Aquitards are capable of generating and preserving large amounts of chemicals. The release of the chemicals from the aquitards poses a potential contamination risk to groundwater that may be used as a drinking water source. This work aimed to identify the contribution of hydrogeochemical processes in the aquitards to groundwater hydrochemistry in the underlying confined basal aquifer by studyin...
متن کاملAbnormally high ammonium of natural origin in a coastal aquifer-aquitard system in the Pearl River Delta, China.
High-nitrogen loadings of rivers and aquifers systems are a major concern because of potential effects on human health and water quality impacts such as eutrophication of lakes and coastal zones. This nitrogen enrichment is commonly attributed to anthropogenic sources such as sewage and agricultural and industrial wastes. The aims of this study were to delineate spatial distribution of groundwa...
متن کاملOccurrence and geochemical behavior of arsenic in a coastal aquifer-aquitard system of the Pearl River Delta, China.
Elevated concentrations of arsenic, up to 161 μg/L, have been identified in groundwater samples from the confined basal aquifer underlying the aquitard of the Pearl River Delta (PRD). Both aquatic arsenic in pore water and solid arsenic in the sediments in the basal aquifer and aquitard were identified. Arsenic speciation of groundwater in the basal aquifer was elucidated on a pH-Eh diagram. In...

Most local people in the agricultural areas of Sistan and Baluchestan Province (Iran), generally consume shallow groundwater from farm wells. This study aimed to assess the water quality and health risk potentially of As, Pb, Cr and Ni for drinking purposes in Zarabad aquifer. Also the geochemical processes controlling chemistry of Zarabad aquifer were studied. Piper diagram shows two major hyd...

Great changes in land use/land cover from rapid urbanization have occurred in the PearlRiver Delta, China. As the primary cause of land development in the urbanization process, urban expansion has mostly occurred on land with higher NPP, significantly impacting theregional ecosystems. The primary purpose of this study was to reveal the impacts of urbanexpansion on the regional NPP. The land cove...
