On Urban Hydrology and Sediment Control

چکیده

Erosion and sedimentation are normal geologic processes which are usually accelerated by irrigating agricultural lands. Of the sediment in irrigation runoff, 70% was removed in a sedimentation pond. Removal efficiency correlated well with flow rate and sediment concentration. Pond design should provide maximum velocity reduction early in pending, allow adequate storage space for the larger particles, and decrease the flow depth toward the outlet while maintaining a constant forward velocity. This requires a fan-shaped pond, deeper at the inlet and decreasing in depth while increasing in width toward the outlet. This pond shape fits well into natural swales or draws.

Water Quality Signals from Rural Land Use and Exurbanization in a Mountain Landscape: What’s Clear and What’s Confounded?

In mountainous landscapes with high climatic and geomorphic variability, how do rural land uses and exurbanization alter hydrology and water quality? We evaluated effects of rural land use and exurbanization on streamflows, suspended sediment concentrations and loads, specific conductance, and summer water temperatures in 12 streams and rivers within the Upper Little Tennessee River basin in th...

Usses – an Urban Stream Stability Expert System

An expert system for analyzing urban stream stability and developing mitigation measures for stream instabilities is developed using principles of the geomorphologic, hydraulic, and hydrologic processes that occur in a stream system and their effects on the system upstream and downstream. The hydrologic and hydraulic aspects of the system that affect flow in the stream and often the sediment lo...

Stream macroinvertebrate response to catchment urbanisation (Georgia, U.S.A.)

1. The effects of catchment urbanisation on water quality were examined for 30 streams (stratified into 15, 50 and 100 km ± 25% catchments) in the Etowah River basin, Georgia, U.S.A. We examined relationships between land cover (implying cover and use) in these catchments (e.g. urban, forest and agriculture) and macroinvertebrate assemblage attributes using several previously published indices ...

The performance of vegetative filter strips is governed by complex mechanisms. Models can help simulate the field conditions and predict the buffer effectiveness. A single event model for simulating the hydrology and sediment filtration in buffer strips is developed and field tested. Input parameters, sensitivity analysis, calibration and field testing of the model are presented. The model was ...
