Compensatory and Noncompensatory Consumer Strategies in a Monopolistic Screening Model
نویسنده
چکیده
A monopolist supplies a multi-attribute good and does not know whether the consumer makes or avoids tradeoffs between attributes. We illustrate a form of exploitation to which the tradeoff-avoiding consumer is vulnerable. (JEL: D6, D8, L1, L2)

Neural Mechanisms Underlying Compensatory and Noncompensatory Strategies in Risky Choice
Individuals may differ systematically in their applied decision strategies, which has critical implications for decision neuroscience but is yet scarcely studied. Our study's main focus was therefore to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying compensatory versus noncompensatory strategies in risky choice. Here, we compared people using a compensatory expected value maximization with people...
متن کاملUsing the Lens Model Framework to Characterize Compensatory and Noncompensatory Decision Making Strategies
This paper presents an effort to use the Lens Model Framework, as originally conceived by Egon Brunswik to characterize a functional relationship between a decision maker and his environment which is mediated through the lens of probabilistic variables in the environment. In particular, the authors are interested in using the Lens Model to explore the hypothesis that human judgments oscillate b...
متن کاملHow Does Instance-Based Inference About Event Frequencies Develop? An Analysis with a Computational Process Model
To make inferences about the frequency of events in the world (e.g., the prevalence of diseases or the popularity of consumer products), people often exploit observations of relevant instances sampled from their personal social network. How does this ability to infer event frequencies by searching and relying on personal instance knowledge develop from childhood to adulthood? To address this qu...
متن کاملInferring rule-based strategies in dynamic judgment tasks: toward a noncompensatory formulation of the lens model
Performers in time-stressed, information-rich tasks develop rule-based, simplification strategies to cope with the severe cognitive demands imposed by judgment and decision making. Linear regression modeling, proven useful for describing judgment in a wide range of static tasks, may provide misleading accounts of these heuristics. That approach assumes cue-weighting and cue-integration are well...
متن کاملExpert intuitions: how to model the decision strategies of airport customs officers?
How does expertise impact the selection of decision strategies? We asked airport customs officers and a novice control group to decide which passengers (described on several cue dimensions) they would submit to a search. Additionally, participants estimated the validities of the different cues. Then we modeled the decisions using compensatory strategies, which integrate many cues, and a noncomp...
