Continuous Dynamics in Real-Time Cognition
نویسندگان
چکیده
Rather than a sequence of logical operations performed on discrete symbols, real-time cognition is better described as continuously changing patterns of neuronal activity. The continuity in these dynamics indicates that, in between describable states of mind, much of our mental activity does not lend itself to the linguistic labels relied on by much of psychology. We discuss eye-tracking and mouse-tracking evidence for this temporal continuity, and provide geometric visualizations of mental activity depicted as a continuous trajectory through a neuronal state space. Close visitations of labeled attractors may constitute word recognition events and object recognition events, but the majority of the mental trajectory traverses unlabeled regions of state space, instantiating multifarious mixtures of mental states.

متن کاملA real-time recursive dynamic model for vehicle driving simulators
This paper presents the Real-Time Recursive Dynamics (RTRD) model that is developed for driving simulators. The model could be implemented in the Driving Simulator. The RTRD can also be used for off-line high-speed dynamics analysis, compared with commercial multibody dynamics codes, to speed up mechanical design process. An overview of RTRD is presented in the paper. Basic models for specific ...
متن کاملWill a category cue attract you? Motor output reveals dynamic competition across person construal.
People use social categories to perceive others, extracting category cues to glean membership. Growing evidence for continuous dynamics in real-time cognition suggests, contrary to prevailing social psychological accounts, that person construal may involve dynamic competition between simultaneously active representations. To test this, the authors examined social categorization in real-time by ...
متن کاملSmog, Cognition and Real-World Decision-Making
Cognitive functioning is critical as in our daily life a host of real-world complex decisions in high-stakes markets have to be made. The decision-making process can be vulnerable to environmental stressors. Summarizing the growing economic and epidemiologic evidence linking air pollution, cognition performance and real-world decision-making, we first illustrate key physiological and psychologi...
متن کاملReal-time representations of whole brain dynamics: towards computational models for “hybrid” systems
In this paper, models from complexity theory is used to characterize the dynamics of attentional networks during continuous behavior and brain activity. The argument is made that brain networks controlling attentional resources are robust to inherent levels of distraction. This is governed by a dichotomous model related to capacity. The maintenance of stable automatic activity over time is due ...
