چکیده

Every archaeological excavation must deal with a vast number of ceramic fragments. The documentation, administration and scientific processing of these fragments represent a temporal, personnel, and financial problem. We are developing an automated classification and reconstruction system for archaeological fragments. The goal is to relate different fragments belonging to the same vessel based on shape, material and color, thus the color information is important in the pre-classification process. In this work a color specification technique is proposed, which exploits the fact that the spectral reflectance of materials like archaeological fragments vary slow in the visible spectrum. We explain how the acquisition system is calibrated in order to get accurate colorimetric information with respect to archaeological requirements. Experimental results are presented for archaeological objects and for a set of test color patches.

Dating WF16: Exploring the Chronology of a Pre-Pottery Neolithic A Settlement in the Southern Levant

A pre-requisite for understanding the transition to the Neolithic in the Levant is the establishment of a robust chronology, most notably for the late Epi-Palaeolithic and Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA) periods. In this contribution we undertake a dating analysis of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic site of WF16, southern Jordan, drawing on a sample of 46 AMS C dates. We utilise Bayesian methods to qua...

Archaeological Fragments Classification Based on Rgb Color and Texture Features

Artifacts are often found in archaeological excavation sites mixed with each other randomly. Therefore, classifying them manually is a difficult task and time consuming because they commonly exceed thousands of fragments. Thus, the aim of this study is to find a solution for classification of ancient pottery into groups by computer assistance. This is a preparatory stage for the next phase, whi...

Recognition of Lustered Pottery of the 3rd and 4th Centuries AH/AD 9th and 10th Centuries from the Imitated Ones

Luster is an innovative decorative technique applied in the Islamic era. The imitative technique of luster glaze is the result of efforts of some potters to imitate the visual features of the earlier luster. The two techniques differ in their production methods, but have many similarities in terms of physical characteristics of the works, including color, pattern, and in some cases, form. Such ...
