Fertilization at the Time of Planting: Nine-year Response of Douglas-fir, Engelmann Spruce and Lodgepole Pine in the Southern Interior

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Fertilization at planting with GromaxTM teabags did not affect survival of Douglas-fir, Engelmann spruce or lodgepole pine seedlings. Fertilized seedlings were taller and had larger stem diameters in the second year after planting, but this effect had disappeared by year five. In year nine, the proportion of seedlings that had reached free growing was similar in fertilized and unfertilized treatments. Seedlings of all three species performed better on a mesic site than a mesic-subhygric site, but the trends in response to fertilization were similar on the two sites.

Freezing tolerance of conifer seeds and germinants.

Survival after freezing was measured for seeds and germinants of four seedlots each of interior spruce (Picea glauca x engelmannii complex), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) and western red cedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Donn). Effects of eight seed treatments on post-freezing survival of seeds and germinants were tested: dry, ...

Ponderosa Pine, Mixed Conifer, and Spruce-fir Forests

Before European settlement of the interior west of the United States, coniferous forests of this region were influenced by many disturbance regimes, primarily fires, insects, diseases, and herbivory, which maintained a diversity of successional stages and vegetative types across landscapes. Activities after settlement, such as fire suppression, grazing, and logging significantly altered these d...

Variation in water potential, hydraulic characteristics and water source use in montane Douglas-fir and lodgepole pine trees in southwestern Alberta and consequences for seasonal changes in photosynthetic capacity.

Tree species response to climate change-induced shifts in the hydrological cycle depends on many physiological traits, particularly variation in water relations characteristics. We evaluated differences in shoot water potential, vulnerability of branches to reductions in hydraulic conductivity, and water source use between Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm. (lodgepole pine) a...

Relationships between forest structure , composition , site , and spruce beetle occurrence in the Intermountain West DeRose ,

Engelmann spruce forests are structurally and compositionally diverse, occur across a wide range of physiographic conditions, and are the result of varying disturbance histories such as fire, wind and spruce beetle. The spruce beetle is a natural disturbance agent of spruce forests and has population levels that fluctuate from endemic to epidemic. Conceptually, structural and compositional dive...

Belowground ectomycorrhizal community structure of mature lodgepole pine and mixed conifer stands in Yellowstone National Park

Forest development patterns following wildfire are known to influence the physical and chemical attributes of soils at different points in time, and are further thought to influence ectomycorrhizal (ECM) community structure. We used molecular methods to compare belowground ECM species richness, composition, and abundance between adjacent stands of homogenous lodgepole pine (established after a ...
