High vowels devoicing and elision in Japanese: A diachronic approach
نویسنده
چکیده
The present study will focus on occurrence of fully voiced, devoiced and elided high vowels in Japanese. High vowels elision in Japanese is supported by clear acoustic evidences, even though it is not globally accepted by scholars in the field. Elided vowels, hence, are considered here to have their own status. Moreover, this study is conceived in order to state differences and analogies among four dialects and between five age groups. In fact, the main interest of this research is to prove that high vowel elision may be considered as an innovative phenomenon. Consequently, it is expected that a diatopically and diachronically based study may suggest the drift of Japanese language about the said phenomenon. Therefore, it may be possible to hypothesize changes on the strict syllable structure deriving from Japanese writing system, mainly composed of syllabic morae, which conditions mother tongue perception of Japanese phonology and phonotactics.

in Japanese . A perceptive approach
The present study will focus on the perception by the native speakers of elided high vowels in Japanese and of deleted sounds in spontaneous speech. Study of mother tongues perception of the said phenomenon may serve as a capstone toward the acceptance of elided vowels in Japanese. It is a common belief among scholars that vowel elision may interfere with words comprehension, for the missing vo...
متن کاملVowel Devoicing in Tokyo Japanese
This paper proposes a phonological analysis for vowel devoicing in Tokyo Japanese using the framework of Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky, 1993). Generally speaking, in Japanese the high vowels /i, u/ are devoiced when they occur between two voiceless consonants. However, there are some contexts where such a simple generalization does not hold, e.g., so called “word-final devoicing” and ...
متن کاملAcoustic and articulatory correlates of Japanese devoiced vowels
In Japanese, high vowels may devoice between two unvoiced obstruents (k[u̥]kaku 'division', k[i̥]kaku 'plan'). Recent studies have shown that the devoicing of non-high vowels (k[ḁ]karu 'take', k[e̥]ta 'digit, k[o̥]tae 'answer') may also occur. This paper evaluates the role of vowel duration and vocal folds gestures involved in vowel devoicing in Japanese. An experiment using an electroglottograph (...
متن کاملTemporal, Spectral Evidence of Devoiced Vowels in Korean
Vowel devoicing is a phenomenon that is reported to occur in many languages such as Japanese, Parisian and Montreal French, Turkish and English. This paper investigates vowel devoicing in Korean. A devoiced vowel does not exhibit characteristic vocal tract resonances, and instead is realized as a long interval of aspiration or frication following consonant release, resulting in non-distinct seg...
متن کاملDevoicing of Japanese vowels by taiwanese learners of Japanese
Of the Taiwanese participants, only one showed any significant speech rate effect (t = 1.88, p < .05 for the first vowel of the tokens; t =2.29, p < .025 for both vowels combined). One other showed no speech rate effects whatsoever, instead inconsistently devoicing some tokens, while the third did not devoice any vowels within the tokens, instead only devoicing a small number of sentence-final ...
