Developing a navigational 3D audio game with hierarchical levels of difficulty for the visually impaired players

چکیده
The Binaural Navigation Game is a 3D audio game with hierarchical levels of difficulty that can be used by both normal sighted or visually impaired players. The purpose of the game is to test and train the sound localization skills, to entertain and to provide an alternative to the common video games available on the market nowadays. The sonification technique is based on the perception of 3D binaural sounds synthesized with non-individualized Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) and on the inversely proportional sound intensity encoding of distance. Furthermore, we use an original method based on the simultaneous perception of two types of noise that aims to reduce the incidence of front-back confusions. This game has been tested in an experimental procedure (comprised of a pre-test, a hapticauditory feedback based training and a post-test session) in which 10 visually impaired subjects (with a percent of residual vision ranging from 0% to 15%) have participated. This paper aims to present the design and development of the Binaural Navigation Game, the Game Editor (an application that allows the experimenter to set the layout of new sets of levels) and the Binaural Game Analyzer, a tool used to visualize and evaluate the players’ performances..

SOUND HUNTER Developing a Navigational HRTF - Based Audio Game for People with Visual
In this thesis, I propose a framework for designing 3D-based audio-only games in which all navigation is based on perceiving the 3D-audio, as opposed to relying on other navigational aids or imagining the audio as being spatial, where additional sounds may be added later on in the development process. To test the framework, a game named Sound Hunter was developed in an iterative process togethe...
متن کاملDesign and evaluation of auditory spatial cues for decision making within a game environment for persons with visual impairments
An audio platform game was created and evaluated in order to answer the question of whether or not an audio game could be designed that effectively conveys the spatial information necessary for persons with visual impairments to successfully navigate the game levels and respond to audio cues in time to avoid obstacles. The game used several types of audio cues (sounds and speech) to convey the ...
متن کاملDesigning 3d Audio and Haptic Interfaces for Training the Sound Localization Ability of the Visually Impaired People
An assistive device, based on an alternate sensory modality, such as hearing or touch, can help the blind individuals to gain spatial awareness, to enhance their navigational skills and to improve their life quality. The purpose of our research is to develop a navigational system that would enable the visually impaired people to travel and orient in space by substituting the visual sense with r...
متن کاملPyvox 2: An Audio Game Accessible to Visually Impaired People Playable without Visual Nor Verbal Instructions
In games, we can discern two approaches to learn how interactivity works: the instructions for use and the interactivity itself. The number of spoken languages is evaluated at more than six thousand eight hundred: for this reason, instructions for use can’t make games understandable for all potential users, which is especially true for audio games accessible to visually impaired players, since ...
متن کاملThe Design and Evaluation of a Computer Game for the Blind in the GRAB Haptic Audio Virtual Environment
This paper describes the development and evaluation of a computer game for blind and visually impaired people using a new haptic audio virtual environment (HAVE). The GRAB HAVE consists of a new two-finger haptic interface and Haptic Geometric Modeller which enables people to locate and interact with 3D computer-generated objects using their sense of touch and audio feedback. A simple 3D search...
