Do Customers Learn from Stock Prices?

چکیده
This paper provides evidence that a firm’s stock price movements affect its customer demand. I develop a model in which customers learn about a firm’s product quality partially from its stock price. This learning induces feedback from the price to customer demand. Furthermore, the firm manager adjusts product launch decisions in anticipation of these demand shifts. Consistent with the model’s implications, I find that non-fundamental price declines due to mutual fund redemptions reduce sales and online customer interest. This depressed demand is accompanied by a lower probability of product launches. My findings underscore the real effects of financial market prices. JEL Classification: D12, D83, G14, G31

متن کاملOverreaction in Stock Forecasts and Prices
We study the degree of individual and aggregate market overreaction in a dynamic experimental auction market. In 13 sessions with overall 101 students we find overreaction to new information both in stock price forecasts and transaction prices. Interestingly, market forces do not seem to help in lowering overreaction to new information in our setting. Moreover, we illustrate that subjects are n...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study of Posted Prices
In industries with perishable goods dynamic pricing schemes are often used and many models have been proposed to maximize seller’s revenues. These models are based on a range of assumptions about how customers make buying decisions. متن کاملCustomer Satisfaction and Stock Prices: High Returns, Low Risk
Do investments in customer satisfaction lead to excess returns? If so, are these returns associated with higher stock market risk? The empirical evidence presented in this article suggests that the answer to the first question is yes, but equally remarkable, the answer to the second question is no, suggesting that satisfied customers are economic assets with high returns/low risk. Although thes...
متن کاملDynamic Pricing with Periodic Review and a Finite set of Prices with Cancellation
In this paper, three dynamic pricing models are developed and analyzed. We assume a limited number of a particular asset is offered for sale over a period of time. This asset is perishable and can be an inventory or a manufacturing capacity. During each period, the seller sets a price for this asset. This price is selected from a predetermined discrete set. The maximum amount which a customer i...
