Invited Talk: Music, Language, and Computational Modeling: Lessons from the Key-Finding Problem
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent research in computational music research, including my own, has been greatly influenced by methods in computational linguistics. But I believe the influence could also go the other way: Music may offer some interesting lessons for language research, particularly with regard to the modeling of cognition. In this talk I will focus on an important problem in music cognition: the problem of key identification. I will argue that this problem is in some ways analogous to the problem of syntactic parsing in language. I will present a simple Bayesian model that performs well at the key-finding task. I will then consider some implications of the model for other issues. The model represents moment-to-moment changes in key over time and captures “reanalysis” effects in key perception. The model can be used to estimate the tonal ambiguity of a musical passage, and can also be used to estimate the probability of note patterns (just as a probabilistic grammar can be used to estimate the probability of word strings). An interesting question here concerns expectation: In forming expectations for the next surface element (note or word), do we consider all possible structures (syntactic structures or keys) or just the most probable one? Finally, the model sheds light on the concept of “information flow.” It has been suggested that language reflects a tendency towards uniform density of information, in that less probable elements are spread out or elongated; I will suggest that the same may be true in music. Slides for the talk will be available at my website, .

A Hybrid Meta-heuristic Approach to Cope with State Space Explosion in Model Checking Technique for Deadlock Freeness
Model checking is an automatic technique for software verification through which all reachable states are generated from an initial state to finding errors and desirable patterns. In the model checking approach, the behavior and structure of system should be modeled. Graph transformation system is a graphical formal modeling language to specify and model the system. However, modeling of large s...
متن کاملConvexity, Bayesianism, and the Quest Towards Optimal Algorithms (Invited Talk)
In this high level and accessible talk I will describe a recent line of works aimed at trying to understand the intrinsic complexity of computational problems by finding optimal algorithms for large classes of such problems. In particular, I will talk about efforts centered on convex programming as a source for such candidate algorithms. As we will see, a byproduct of this effort is a computati...

Every nation has its own ideals that objectifying them is by culture. In the process of this transformation, the architecture and music which come from the culture of each region have a fundamental role. Architecture and music have many similarities in conceptual directions, space, shape and morphology. They also have similarities in the basic and fundamental principles such as proportions, rhy...
متن کاملAuditory-Verbal Music Play Therapy: An Integrated Approach (AVMPT)
Introduction: Hearing loss occurs when there is a problem with one or more parts of the ear or ears and causes children to have a delay in the language-learning process. Hearing loss affects children's lives and their development. Several approaches have been developed over recent decades to help hearing-impaired children develop language skills. Auditory-verbal therapy (AVT) is one such approa...
متن کامل(Invited talk) Computational Linguistics for Studying Language in People: Principles, Applications and Research Problems
One of the goals of computational linguistics is to create automated systems that can learn, generate, and understand language at all levels of structure (semantics, syntax, morphology, phonology, phonetics). This is a very demanding task whose complete fulfillment lies far in the future. Human beings can learn, generate, and understand language at all levels of structure, and the study of how ...
