Efficient Web Browsing for Mobile Clients using HTTP Compression

چکیده

Efficient web browsing on mobile computers presents a unique challenge. These machines are different from other classes of client computers since they have relatively lowbandwidth connections and they are battery-powered and therefore limited by their energy consumption. However, they tend to interact with the same servers for the delivery of web content. This project investigates optimizing the final critical link between a mobile client and a stationary base station by compressing HTTP request and response messages. Using a split proxy design, compression of individual request messages reduces bandwidth by 26% to 34% across a variety of benchmark traces, and applying compression to response messages yields savings of 59% to 82% of the compressible data. Higher compression rates are achieved by using streaming compression algorithms to compress the streams of request and response messages. In this case, the bandwidth for requests sees an order of magnitude improvement, and the response stream obtains additional savings of 7% to 25% on top of the savings achieved with per-response compression.

Improving Web Browsing on Wireless PDAs Using Thin-Client Computing

Web applications are becoming increasingly popular for mobile wireless PDAs. However, web browsing on these systems can be quite slow. An alternative approach is handheld thin-client computing, in which the web browser and associated application logic run on a server, which then sends simple screen updates to the PDA for display. To assess the viability of this thin-client approach, we compare ...

End - to - end data deduplication for the mobile Web : extended report

The emergence of affordable mobile devices with rich interfaces and access to high bandwidth wireless connections has revolutionized mobile Web access. However, such new trends also imply downloading larger data volumes from the Web, with considerable battery and, often, monetary costs that inevitably degrade user experience. One natural direction to tackle such a challenge is to exploit the su...

An architecture for context-aware mobile web browsing

Context information is not widely used while browsing the internet on mobile devices. With an adapted website, the content can become more suitable to the user. Currently, most examples of context-aware browsing are based on context information gathered by telecom providers, but mobile devices can also gather context information. In this paper, we investigate which context information can be ga...

On Mobile Systems and Disconnected Browsing of Distributed Information

The soflware and protocols associated with the World Wide Web are designed with static hosts in mind. Static hosts are connected to wired, high bandwidth networks, and are capable of transmitting and receiving large amounts of data without significant delays. Therefore the size of the incoming data files has never been a concern. However, this causes problems when information access is desired ...
