Simulated Trading for Maryland’s Nitrogen Loadings in the Chesapeake Bay: A Policy Overlook

چکیده

• Point sources of nitrogen and phosphorus are facilities that discharge wastewater containing these nutrients directly into the waterway. nonpoint sources discharge nutrients indirectly by rainwater runoff; agriculture can be a cause of nonpoint nutrient pollution from chemical fertilizers and animal manure. Nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus, are a leading cause of water quality impairment in lakes, estuaries, rivers, and streams. Though one may at first be inclined to think that an abundance of nutrients can only benefit a given environment, this is not so. In actuality, an excess of nutrients causes eutrophication. Eutrophication is characterized by an influx of biodegradable organic material, the rapid growth of algal blooms, and the depletion of dissolved oxygen. Depletion of dissolved oxygen is a severe threat in waterways because an adequate level of dissolved oxygen is a necessary to sustain life in a healthy aquatic ecosystem. Most aquatic species “breathe” oxygen dissolved in the water column, and while some aquatic life can adapt to low oxygen levels posteutrophication, most can not. This, in turn, results in a variety of problems, including clogged pipelines, fish kills, and reduced recreational opportunities.

Feeding Management to Reduce the Environmental Impact of Dairy Farms

Probably no region of the U.S. has experienced greater attention to impact of agriculture on our environment than Florida. Dr. Jack Van Horn, retired from the University of Florida, was an early advocate of research to demonstrate how dairy production could be good stewards of the environment through improved cropping practices and nutritional management. In recent years the Chesapeake Bay has ...

Pathogen reduction co-benefits of nutrient best management practices

BACKGROUND Many of the practices currently underway to reduce nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment loads entering the Chesapeake Bay have also been observed to support reduction of disease-causing pathogen loadings. We quantify how implementation of these practices, proposed to meet the nutrient and sediment caps prescribed by the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), could reduce pathogen loadings an...

Why metrics matter: evaluating policy choices for reactive nitrogen in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Despite major efforts, the reduction of reactive nitrogen (Nr) using traditional metrics and policy tools for the Chesapeake Bay has slowed in recent years. In this article, we apply the concept of the Nitrogen Cascade to the chemically dynamic nature and multiple sources of Nr to examine the temporal and spatial movement of different forms of Nr through multiple ecosystems and media. We also d...

over marine waters, fueled primarily by several highprofile ocean commission reports and news coverage of coastal dead zones (POC 2003; USCOP 2004; MSNBC 2005). Special attention has been paid to coastal fisheries, generating heated debates over the need to relieve pressure on populations through harvesting restrictions and habitat set-asides and to reduce non-point source pollution that broadl...

Relationships Between Benthic Community Condition, Water Quality, Sediment Quality, Nutrient Loads, and Land Use Patterns in Chesapeake Bay

Associations between macrobenthic communities, measures of water column and sediment exposure, and measures of anthropogenic activities throughout the watershed were examined for the Chesapeake Bay, U.S. The condition of the macrobenthic communities was indicated by a multimetric benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI) that compares deviation of community metrics from values at reference site...
