The objective of this study was to identify clinical and histopathological prognostic factors for local recurrence and metastasis in cSCCs at any body site. Clinical and histopathological data were collected from 224 patients with cSCC. During the median follow-up period of 43 months (range 0–73 months) the cumulative probabilities of recurrence-free survival at 1, 2 and 4 years post-treatment were 98.0%, 96.9% and 94.7%, respectively, and for metastasis-free survival 98.1%, 97.0% and 95.9%, respectively. In univariate survival analyses, significant predictors for local recurrence were tumour diameter and tumour thickness. For metastasis this was invasion of deeper structures, location on the ear, poor differentiation, tumour diameter and tumour thickness. In multivariate survival analysis, every millimetre increase in both tumour diameter and tumour thickness were independent predictors for local recurrence as well as for metastasis and, therefore, it is important to report these in patients’ files. Defining prognostic variables is important for diagnostic workup, treatment and follow-up for an individual patient.

Comparative evaluation of the frequency of myofibroblasts between oral and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas

Introduction: Differentiation of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts is an initial and very important event in tumor genesis. Myofibroblasts produce proteinases that stimulate invasion in cancers. Due to the more malignant potential of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) compared to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) , the aim of the present study was to compare myofibroblasts between OSCC and ...

Factors predictive of recurrence and death from cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: a 10-year, single-institution cohort study.

IMPORTANCE Although most cases of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) are easily cured with surgery or ablation, a subset of these tumors recur, metastasize, and cause death. We conducted the largest study of CSCC outcomes since 1968. OBJECTIVE To identify risk factors independently associated with poor outcomes in primary CSCC. DESIGN A 10-year retrospective cohort study. SETTING An...

Outcomes of Patients With Multiple Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinomas: A 10-Year Single-Institution Cohort Study.

IMPORTANCE Patients with multiple cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (CSCCs) pose a management challenge for physicians, but their prognosis is unknown because outcomes have not been compared between patients who form single vs multiple CSCCs. OBJECTIVE To compare outcomes in patients with 1 vs multiple CSCCs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS A 10-year retrospective single-institution coho...

Tissue eosinophilia in oral and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and normal oral and cutaneous tissues

Introduction: Eosinophils produce proteases that stimulate invasion in cancers. Due to the more malignant potential of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) compared to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), the aim of the present study was to compare tissue eosinophilia between OSCC and CSCC samples to understand whether tissue eosinophilia play a role in different biological...

Genomic analysis of metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.

PURPOSE A rare 5% of cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC) metastasize, lack FDA-approved therapies, and carry a poor prognosis. Our aim was to identify recurrent genomic alterations in this little-studied population of metastatic cSCCs. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN We performed targeted sequencing of 504 cancer-associated genes on lymph node metastases in 29 patients with cSCC and identified muta...
