The contribution of Arabidopsis homologs of L-gulono-1,4-lactone oxidase to the biosynthesis of ascorbic acid.

چکیده
To clarify the involvement of seven Arabidopsis homologs of rat L-gulono-1,4-lactone (L-GulL) oxidase, AtGulLOs, in the biosynthesis of L-ascorbic acid (AsA), transgenic tobacco cells overexpressing the various AtGulLOs were generated. Under treatment with L-GulL, the levels of total AsA in three transgenic tobacco cell lines, overexpressing AtGulLO2, 3, or 5, were significantly increased as compared with those in control cells.

L-ascorbic acid biosynthesis in higher plants from L-gulono-1, 4-lactone and L-galactono-1, 4-lactone.
Detached bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and strawberry (Fragaria) fruits fed l-gulono-1,4-lactone or l-galactono-1,4-lactone convert this compound, in part, to l-ascorbic acid. When l-galactono-1,4-lactone is given as a 0.25% solution to detached bean shoots, the ascorbic acid content is tripled in less than 10 hours. l-Gulono-1,4-lactone is only 5 to 10% as effective as its epimer. Experiments with...
متن کاملl-Ascorbic Acid Biosynthesis in Ochromonas danica.
Ochromonas danica Pringsheim, a freshwater chrysomonad, converts d-glucose into l-ascorbic acid over a metabolic pathway that ;inverts' the carbon chain of the sugar. In this respect, l-ascorbic acid formation resembles that found in ascorbic acid-synthesizing animals. It differs from this process in that d-galacturonate and l-galactono-1,4-lactone, rather than d-glucuronate and l-gulono-1,4-la...
متن کاملMolecular basis for the deficiency in humans of gulonolactone oxidase, a key enzyme for ascorbic acid biosynthesis.
The inability of humans to synthesize L-ascorbic acid is known to be due to a lack of L-gulono-gamma-lactone oxidase, an enzyme that is required for the biosynthesis of this vitamin. Isolation of a cDNA for rat L-gulono-gamma-lactone oxidase allowed us to study the basic defect underlying this deficiency at the gene level and led to isolation of a human genomic clone related to L-gulono-gamma-l...
متن کاملMethyl jasmonate stimulates the de novo biosynthesis of vitamin C in plant cell suspensions.
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is an important primary metabolite of plants that functions as an antioxidant, an enzyme cofactor, and a cell-signalling modulator in a wide array of crucial physiological processes, including biosynthesis of the cell wall, secondary metabolites and phytohormones, stress resistance, photoprotection, cell division, and growth. Plants synthesize ascorbic acid via de no...
متن کاملMetabolic engineering of the fungal D-galacturonate pathway for L-ascorbic acid production
BACKGROUND Synthetic L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is widely used as a preservative and nutrient in food and pharmaceutical industries. In the current production method, D-glucose is converted to L-ascorbic acid via several biochemical and chemical steps. The main source of L-ascorbic acid in human nutrition is plants. Several alternative metabolic pathways for L-ascorbic acid biosynthesis are kn...
