DEDICATION To my mom, Christine E. Brown, and my dad, James W. Brown. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thanks to my committee members, especially my advisor, Ethan D. Clotfelter, for challenging me, straightening me out when I erred, and supporting my work. Thank you for all the times you had to tell me something you knew I wouldn't like, because you helped me improve. Thank you to Sistema Nacional de Areas de Conservacion (SINAC) for permission to perform the field portion of this study. Also, thank you to Manrique Montes and the staff at Lomas Barbudal for logistical assistance. name a few. I might have been able to do this without you, but it would have been awful. Thank you to all the current and past members of the Clotfelter laboratory, especially the undergraduate students. The carotenoid tradeoff hypothesis states that diet-derived carotenoids are traded-off among competing physiological demands, but this statement is rarely tested in ornamented females. The following dissertation tests the carotenoid tradeoff hypothesis in reverse sexually dimorphic convict cichlids (Amantitlania siquia) using carotenoid-supplemented diet treatments and a field-based study of carotenoid intake. Spectral, microscopic, and chemical analysis determined how females allocated the pigments to tissues and how those decisions affected their ventral patch coloration. The results presented in the current study show that carotenoids enhance offspring growth and survival, lower oxidative stress, and reduce the time to clear a parasite. The two final chapters suggest that carotenoid limitation and absorption may not explain carotenoid allocation dynamics in A. siquia. The final chapter proposes an alternative to the carotenoid tradeoff hypothesis as a mechanism to explain the relationship among color, parasites, and oxidative stress.

What Does Carotenoid-Dependent Coloration Tell? Plasma Carotenoid Level Signals Immunocompetence and Oxidative Stress State in Birds–A Meta-Analysis
Mechanisms maintaining honesty of sexual signals are far from resolved, limiting our understanding of sexual selection and potential important parts of physiology. Carotenoid pigmented visual signals are among the most extensively studied sexual displays, but evidence regarding hypotheses on how carotenoids ensure signal honesty is mixed. Using a phylogenetically controlled meta-analysis of 357...
متن کاملCarotenoids in ornamental fish farming
The aquaculture industry has grown dramatically in recent years, with a multimillion-dollar market. There are a variety of freshwater fish, marine fish, mollusks, and ornamental fish cultivated in this industry. The pigment and coloring of ornamental fish are important characteristics for marketing. In edible fish, carotenoids are responsible for the pigmentation of body tissue, while in ...
متن کاملOptimization of resource allocation can explain the temporal dynamics and honesty of sexual signals.
In species in which males are free to dynamically alter their allocation to sexual signaling over the breeding season, the optimal investment in signaling should depend on both a male's state and the level of competition he faces at any given time. We developed a dynamic optimization model within a game-theoretical framework to explore the resulting signaling dynamics at both individual and pop...
متن کاملThe effects of Marigold as natural carotenoids on scale chromatophores’ variations in blue gourami under different stocking densities
Skin coloration is important in ornamental fish. Fish coloration is due to the presence of chromatophores, which contain pigments and are usually located in dermis. In this study, the effects Marigold as natural carotenoids was investigated on fish scale chromatophores’ variations under different stocking densities. For this, diet containing 2.5% Mari...
متن کاملCarotenoid-based coloration predicts resistance to oxidative damage during immune challenge.
Many animal ornaments may have evolved as signals advertising the quality of the bearer. The honesty of the information content of these signals would rely on the costs associated with their expression, these being relatively greater for low-quality than for high-quality individuals. Given the physiological functions of carotenoids, carotenoid-based ornaments could indicate individual immunocom...
