چکیده
Background: Speech and language, particularly at school time are among children’s main and sensitive issues. Thus, speech disorders can affect all personality and psychological aspects of an individual and make him/her facing lots of problems. One of the factors which may be effective in the onset of this impairment is handedness. Because of receiving reactions from their parents and environment, left handed children have more readiness to suffer from speech disorders. Therefore, the present study was aimed at investigating speech disorders and the relationship between the disorder and handedness. Methods: The community under study included primary school children in Kermanshah (Iran) and 600 students were selected through two-stage cluster sampling method proportional to the volume from three different regions of education and training. The samples were evaluated through phonetics test and continuous speech research in terms of pathological symptoms and the existence of symptoms of disorder by a speech and language specialist; and for the child’s left handedness or right handedness, he was asked to write a simple sentence proportionate with his educational grade. Finally, the data were collected, pathological symptoms were recorded in the related checklist and speech disorder was diagnosed. Results: A total of 600 children were participated in the study of them 39.5% were boys (mean age 9.12 ± 1.52 (SD)). 49 students (8.2 percent) were left handed. The rate of speech disorder was obtained 11.2% (67 students) of which 6 students were left handed. Prevalence of speech disorder for boys and girls was 11% and 11.3%, respectively. Among the boys suffering the disorder, 7.7% was left handed, while this value for the girls was 9.8%. A significant correlation was not observed between the rate of disorder and gender and handedness (P less than 0.05). Conclusions: Although a significant statistical relation was not obtained between speech disorder and gender and handedness, the higher disorder prevalence among the female and left handed students can be attributed to the cultural context of male supremacy in Kermanshah and cultural and social pressures on women. These cases are considered as stress factors in increasing prevalence of the disorder. On the other side, the use of left hand is not so acceptable in various cultures; and in different societies, it may result in the child’s punishment. Furthermore, most of modern industrial tools have been mostly intended for the right handed; and these factors cause the left handed child to be under a constant pressure to change the handedness and the subsequent emotional excitements of speech disorders in him.

Pilot Study: The Role of the Hemispheric Lateralization in Mental Disorders by Use of the Limb (Eye, Hand, Foot) Dominance
Introduction: Based on the previous studies, we know that the hemispheric lateralization defects, increase the probability of psychological disorders. We also know that dominant limb is controlled by dominant hemisphere and limb preference is used as an indicator for hemisphere dominance. In this study we attempted to explore the hemispheric dominance by the use of three limbs (hand, foot...
متن کاملAtypical speech lateralization in adults with developmental coordination disorder demonstrated using functional transcranial Doppler ultrasound
Research using clinical populations to explore the relationship between hemispheric speech lateralization and handedness has focused on individuals with speech and language disorders, such as dyslexia or specific language impairment (SLI). Such work reveals atypical patterns of cerebral lateralization and handedness in these groups compared to controls. There are few studies that examine this r...
متن کاملFunctional and structural brain asymmetries in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare the functional and gray matter asymmetries in patients with schizophrenia (SZ), patients with bipolar disorders (BD), and healthy controls (HCs) to test whether decreased leftward functional hemispheric lateralization and gray matter volume asymmetry could mark the boundary between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. METHODS A total of 31 right-handed SZ...
متن کاملFunctional Lateralization of Speech Processing in Adults and Children Who Stutter
Developmental stuttering is a speech disorder in fluency characterized by repetitions, prolongations, and silent blocks, especially in the initial parts of utterances. Although their symptoms are motor related, people who stutter show abnormal patterns of cerebral hemispheric dominance in both anterior and posterior language areas. It is unknown whether the abnormal functional lateralization in...
متن کاملComparing the Voice Handicap Index Scores in Groups with Structural and Functional Voice Disorders
Objective: The effects of voice disorders vary from person to person. Occupation, work environment, life, and family reaction are variables that affect one’s perception of his/her own as an impaired voice. Voice Handicap Index (VHI) has not yet been used to compare the degree of voice disorders. Assuming that the quality of life may be different under a variety of voice disorders and that diffe...
متن کاملAbnormal neural oscillatory activity to speech sounds in schizophrenia: a magnetoencephalography study.
Schizophrenia impairs many cognitive functions, and abnormalities in language processing have been proposed as one of the bases for this disorder. Previously, it was reported that different magnetoencephalography (MEG) patterns of the evoked oscillatory activity (eOA) of 20-45 Hz to speech and nonspeech sounds were evidence of a fast mechanism for the representation and identification of speech...
