Systematic observation of tunneling field-ionization in highly excited Rb Rydberg atoms

چکیده
Pulsed field ionization of high-n (90 ≤ n ≤ 150) manifold states in Rb Rydberg atoms has been investigated in high slew-rate regime. Two peaks in the field ionization spectra were systematically observed for the investigated n region, where the field values at the lower peak do not almost depend on the excitation energy in the manifold, while those at the higher peak increase with increasing excitation energy. The fraction of the higher peak component to the total ionization signals increases with increasing n, exceeding 80% at n = 147. Characteristic behavior of the peak component and the comparison with theoretical predictions indicate that the higher peak component is due to the tunneling process. The obtained results show for the first time that the tunneling process plays increasingly the dominant role at such highly excited nonhydrogenic Rydberg atoms.

Manipulating ionization path in a Stark map: Stringent schemes for the selective field ionization in highly excited Rb Rydberg atoms
We have developed a quite stringent method in selectivity to ionize the low angularmomentum (l) states which lie below and above the adjacent manifold in highly excited Rb Rydberg atoms. The method fully exploits the pulsed field-ionization characteristics of the manifold states in high slew-rate regime: Specifically the low l state below (above) the adjacent manifold is firstly transferred to ...
متن کاملControlling the interactions between cold Rydberg atoms by a time-varying electric field
Long-range interactions between cold Rydberg atoms are being investigated for neutral-atom quantum computing, quantum simulations, phase transitions in cold Rydberg gases and other applications. Fine tuning of the interaction strength can be implemented using Förster resonances between Rydberg atoms controlled by an electric field. The observation of the Stark-tuned Förster resonances between R...

The dynamics of de excitation between highly excited Rydberg states 15 n 60 of Rb in a magnetic field of 0.85 ±0.05 T is studied with far-infrared pulses 90–110 and 50 m originating from a free electron laser. We measured the excitation spectrum to states around n=40 from a deeper bound state near n=25. Moreover, starting from a highly excited state 30 n 60 below and in the n-mixing regime we i...
متن کاملField-ionization threshold and its induced ionization-window phenomenon for Rydberg atoms in a short single-cycle pulse
We study the field-ionization threshold behavior when a Rydberg atom is ionized by a short single-cycle pulse field. Both hydrogen and sodium atoms are considered. The required threshold field amplitude is found to scale inversely with the binding energy when the pulse duration becomes shorter than the classical Rydberg period, and, thus, more weakly bound electrons require larger fields for io...
متن کاملIonization of Rydberg atoms in THz-laser fields at the transition from low to high scaled frequencies
We have studied the ionization of Rydberg–excited xenon atoms in THz-laser fields and by quantum dynamical calculations. The experimental threshold laser field strength for 10% ionization probability follows an n (ω/2π =1.04 THz) dependence (n effective principal quantum number) with additional weak resonance structures and shows that ionization does not occur by a Landau–Zener mechanism. At sc...
