چکیده
In this paper we present a non-rigid registration method to align pre-operative MRI (preMRI) with resected intra-operative MRI (iMRI) to compensate for brain deformation during tumor resection. This method formulates the registration as a three-variable (point correspondence, deformation field and resection region) functional minimization problem, in which point correspondence is represented by a fuzzy assign matrix, deformation field is represented by a piecewise linear function regularized by the strain energy of a heterogeneous biomechanical model, and resection region is represented by a maximal connected tetrahedral mesh. A Nested Expectation and Maximization framework is developed to simultaneously resolve these three variables. This method accommodates a heterogeneous biomechanical model as the regularization term to realistically describe the underlying deformation field, and allows the removal of the tetrahedra from the model to simulate the tumor resection. A simple two tissue heterogeneous model (ventricle plus the rest of the brain) is used to evaluate this method on 14 clinical cases. The experimental results show the effectiveness of this method in correcting the deformation induced by resection. The comparison between the homogeneous model and the heterogeneous model demonstrates the statistical significance of the improvement brought by the heterogeneous model (P-value 0.04).

A nonrigid registration method for correcting brain deformation induced by tumor resection.
PURPOSE This paper presents a nonrigid registration method to align preoperative MRI with intraoperative MRI to compensate for brain deformation during tumor resection. This method extends traditional point-based nonrigid registration in two aspects: (1) allow the input data to be incomplete and (2) simulate the underlying deformation with a heterogeneous biomechanical model. METHODS The meth...

Purpose: Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is one of the causes of death or permanent invalidity which can occur unexpectedly in both military and civilian populations. This study set out to conduct a combined Eulerian-Lagrangian computational analysis of the interaction between a single planar blast wave and a human head in order to assess the extent of intracranial shock w...

This method extends a successful existing Physics-Based Non-Rigid Registration (PBNRR) technique implemented in ITKv4.5. The new method relies on a parallel adaptive heterogeneous biomechanical Finite Eleme...
متن کاملDeformable Registration of Brain Tumor Images Via a Statistical Model of Tumor-Induced Deformation
An approach to the deformable registration of three-dimensional brain tumor images to a normal brain atlas is presented. The approach involves the integration of three components: a biomechanical model of tumor mass-effect, a statistical approach to estimate the model's parameters, and a deformable image registration method. Statistical properties of the sought deformation map from the atlas to...
متن کاملBrain Shift Computation Using a Fully Nonlinear Biomechanical Model
In the present study, fully nonlinear (i.e. accounting for both geometric and material nonlinearities) patient specific finite element brain model was applied to predict deformation field within the brain during the craniotomy-induced brain shift. Deformation of brain surface was used as displacement boundary conditions. Application of the computed deformation field to align (i.e. register) the...
