چکیده

Urinary stone is one of the oldest and the most common afflictions in humans, animals and birds. A number of people suffer from urinary stones. Brushite or calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate (CHPD) crystals are frequently found in urinary stones. Many fruits contain high amount of tartaric acid. Therefore, the effect of tartaric acid on the growth of CHPD crystals is presented in this article. Moreover, tamarind is widely used in Indian cooking, and contains high amount of tartaric acid. The effect of tartaric acid and tamarind is investigated in terms of the number of crystals grown, their morphologies and their average size under in vitro conditions. The growth of CHPD crystals is carried out using single-diffusion gel growth technique in silica gel medium. This study incorporates multidisciplinary interests and may be used in formulating a strategy for the prevention or dissolution of urinary stones.

Mineralogical composition of urinary calculi from southern India

Incidence of urinary calculi and its composition have been showing a remarkable global variation with profound changes in living standards and dietary habits. Indian urinary stone composition is usually different from that of the western countries. Urinary calculi in northern India were composed of pure calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) and pure calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD) and in Bihar were...

Role of Strontium on the Crystallization of Calcium Hydrogen Phosphate Dihydrate (CHPD)

Calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate (CHPD, CaHPO4· 2H2O) or brushite is found quite frequently in urinary calculi (stones). Crystallization of brushite has been carried out in sodium metasilicate (SMS) gel with and without adding ‘Sr’ as additive. In pure system, dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA, CaHPO4) or monetite and hydroxyapatite (HA, Ca5(PO4)3(OH)) grew along with brushite. The presen...

Evolution of post-ESWL residual lithiasis depending on the type of calculus and urine composition.

OBJECTIVES Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is one of the most commonly used procedures for removal of renal calculi from the upper urinary tract, but complete expulsion of the fragments generated is not always achieved. This can lead to new lithiasic episodes, and it is considered that 10-26% of fragmented calculi can undergo regrowth. This in vitro study investigated the influence...

Metabolism of crystals within the joint.

Monosodium urate (MSU), calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) and basic calcium phosphate (BCP) crystals deposit in joints and surrounding tissues causing acute inflammation and chronic cartilage damage. A number of endogenous substances and physicochemical conditions affect their precipitation, growth and even dissolution, regulating their metabolism and inflammatory activity. We review how M...
