Process Intensification for Separation of Carboxylic Acids from Fermentation Broths using Reactive Extraction
نویسنده
چکیده
The potential role of a new energy efficient fermentation technology has been receiving growing attention in past 4 decades. Carboxylic acids such as propionic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, itaconic acid, butyric acid and nicotinic acid etc. have been used as the most efficient fermentation chemicals. This paper presents a state-of-art review on the development of the separation techniques for carboxylic acids from fermentation broths. This paper mainly focuses on reactive extraction that is found to be a promising alternative to the conventional recovery processes in terms of intensifying

Equilibrium Study on Reactive Extraction of Acetic Acid with Tri-n-butyl Phosphate in N-hexane
Extraction of carboxylic acids from dilute aqueous solution using traditional solvents such as ketones, alcohols, ethers, and ester is inefficient because the distribution ratio is rather low. Reactive extraction which exploits reversible chemical complexation is an effective separation process for extraction of carboxylic acids from aqueous streams such as fermentation broths and wastewaters. ...
متن کاملThe Application of Membrane Distillation for Broth Separation in Membrane Bioreactors
The possibility of applying membrane distillation to support the fermentation process was investigated. The capillary polypropylene membranes were assembled in the membrane modules. The studies were carried out using the standard solutions containing the compounds frequently occurring in the broths such as ethanol, citric, acetic and lactic acids, glycerol and 1,3-propanediol. The performance o...
متن کاملSeparation Process Of Citric Acid with Tertiary Amines/Diluents in Supercritical CO2
Citric acid is the most widely used organic acid in the field of foods and beverages as an acidulant as well as in pharmaceutical and chemical products. Demand for citric acid has increased worldwide, including in Turkey. It is generally produced by surface or submerged fungal fermentation mainly with Aspergillus niger. However, the highest citric acid production has been obtained with the subm...
متن کاملSeparation of Carboxylic Acids from Aqueous Solutions using Hollow Fiber Membrane Contactors
Separation of formic, acetic, and propionic acids from the aqueous stream using membrane solvent extraction has been studied using three different membrane contactors made of polysulfone (PS), polyethersulfone (PES), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) using two different solvents; including ethyl acetate (EA) and diisopropyl ether (DIPE). The efciency of the membrane and e...
متن کاملIntensification of Recovery of Nicotinic Acid Using Reactive Extraction: Equilibrium Study
Nicotinic acid is widely used in the food, pharmaceutical and biochemical industries. Fermentation technology for the production of nicotinic acid in particular has been known for more than a century and acid have been produced in aqueous solutions. Reactive liquid-liquid extraction for the recovery of the organic acids by a suitable extractant has been found to be a promising alternative to th...
