Ultrastructure of an unusual contractile vacuole in several chrysomonad phytoflagellates.

چکیده
The infrastructure of the contractile vacuole of Ochromonas and Poterioochromonas species is described. It appears to be a permanent structure in the anterior end of the phytoflagellate, consisting of a central cavity with a unit-membrane lining from which flattened saccules protrude in all directions. The contracted saccules are about 40 nm in diameter and are made up of a single trilammellar unit membrane about 9 nm thick and continuous with the central cavity membrane. In their contracted state the saccules contain transverse fibrils which may be involved in the contraction of the saccules; these fibrils are no longer seen when the central cavity and the saccules swell. The saccules seem to merge and become continuous with the central cavity during the swelling of the contractile vacuole.

The Effect of Cadmium on the Ultrastructure and Metallothionein Levels in the Liver and Kidneys of Japanese quail
Background: The aim of this study was to use Japanese quail as an animal model to evaluate the effects of cadmium (Cd) on the ultrastructure and the activity of metallothionein (MT) in the liver and kidneys. Methods: One hundred male Japanese quails were randomly divided into two Cd and control groups in 2015. The first group received 100 ppm Cd for 60 days in their feed. The ultrastructural c...
متن کاملMorphology and Phylogeny of a New Frontonia Ciliate, F. paramagna spec. nov. (Ciliophora, Peniculida) from Harbin, Northeast China.
This paper describes a new Frontonia ciliate, F. paramagna spec. nov., sampled from freshwater in Harbin, northeast China, based on its morphology, infraciliature, ultrastructure and small subunit ribosomal RNA gene information. The new species is defined by the following features: large sized freshwater form, 400-610 × 110-160 μm in vivo, about 179-201 somatic kineties, three peniculi, each wi...
متن کاملProton pumps populate the contractile vacuoles of Dictyostelium amoebae
Amoebae of the eukaryotic microorganism Dictyostelium discoideum were found to contain an interconnected array of tubules and cisternae whose membranes were studded with 15-nm-diameter "pegs." Comparison of the ultrastructure and freeze-fracture behavior of these pegs with similar structures found in other cells and tissues indicated that they were the head domains of vacuolar-type proton pumps...
متن کاملA STUDY ON ULTRASTRUCTURAL ASPECTS OF SEED DORMANCY IN WILD OATS
The structural differences between dormant and nondormant seeds of wild oats (Avena ludoviciana Durieu) were studied by light and transmission electron microscopy. Radial elongation of scutellum epithelial cells were observed in nondormant seeds after imbibition, compared with dormant seeds in which cells were completely compressed. Ultrastructural differences for example, dilution of cytopla...
متن کاملCellular membranes that undergo cyclic changes in tension: Direct measurement of force generation by an in vitro contractile vacuole of Paramecium multimicronucleatum.
The contractile vacuole of the fresh water protozoan Paramecium is a membrane-bound vesicle that expels excess cytosolic water, acquired osmotically, through its periodic exocytotic activity. The in vitro contractile vacuole, isolated in a small amount of cytosol from the Paramecium cell and confined under mineral oil, showed periodic rounding and slackening at regular intervals for an extended...
