چکیده

The stress-induced transformation behavior of retained austenite is considered in this work. With the development of transformationinduced plasticity (TRIP) steels this deformation mode is of growing importance. Twinned martensite structures were calculated using the crystallographic theory of martensite. An available work criterion was used to predict the transformation potentials for 16 different in-plane stress states for sheet sample geometry. By rotating the twinned martensite structures over all crystallographic orientations using Euler angles, the magnitude of the transformation potential was plotted as an orientation distribution plot for comparison with typical texture components. From these data, the Brass and Copper orientation components that are typical in retained austenite such as in TRIP steels were found to have low transformation potential values. Grains aligned with these orientations would require higher stresses to transform than other orientations, and may therefore never transform. This correlates to experimental observations that heavily deformed TRIP steel contains residual retained austenite. Published by Elsevier Ltd. on behalf of Acta Materialia Inc.

Strain-Induced Martensite Transformation Simulations during Cold Rolling of AISI 301 Austenitic Stainless Steel

Austenite is a semi-stable phase in most stainless steels that deforms to martensite under Md30 and forms martensitetype ά and ε due to the deformation in the steels. Since the distribution of strain induced martensite plays animportant role in achieving desired properties, the main objective of the present work is to model martensitedistribution of ά during cold rolling using...

Investigation of Transformation Induced Plasticity in High Al–low Si TRIP Steel

This study was conducted in order to investigate the influence of plastic deformation on the transformation of retained austenite in a TRIP steel with a high content of Al and a low content of Si. To the aim, appropriate treatments were used to produce the starting material (TRIP steel). The microstructure of the obtained steel was composed of bainite and phases including ferrite and retained a...

Transformation induced plasticity assisted steels: stress or strain affected martensitic transformation?

Transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) assisted steels contain a small quantity of carbon enriched retained austenite, which transforms into martensite during the course of plastic deformation. Transformation of this kind can be induced by both stress and plastic strain. The detailed mechanism by which the martensite is induced is different for these two scenarios. An attempt is made here to ...

Influence of low-temperature nitriding on the strain-induced martensite and laser-quenched austenite in a magnetic encoder made from 304L stainless steel

We have investigated the possibility of producing a magnetic encoder by an innovative process. Instead of turning grooves in the encoder bar for precise positioning, we incorporated the information in 304L stainless steel by transforming the austenite to martensite after bar extrusion in liquid nitrogen and marking it with a laser, which caused a local transformation of martensite back into aus...

Deformation behavior of duplex austenite and ε-martensite high-Mn steel

Deformation and work hardening behavior of Fe-17Mn-0.02C steel containing ε-martensite within the austenite matrix have been investigated by means of in situ microstructural observations and x-ray diffraction analysis. During deformation, the steel shows the deformation-induced transformation of austenite → ε-martensite → α'-martensite as well as the direct transformation of austenite → α'-mart...
