چکیده
The latent heat of fusion, L of the cryobiological media (a solute laden aqueous solution) is a crucial parameter in the cryopreservation process and has often been approximated to that of pure water ( 335 mJ=mgÞ. This study experimentally determines the magnitude and dynamics of latent heat during freezing of 14 different pre-nucleated solute laden aqueous systems using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC-Pyris 1). The latent heat of the solutions studied is found to be significantly less than that of pure water and is dependent on both the ‘amount’ and ‘type’ of solutes (or solids) in solution. DSC experiments are also performed at 1, 5 and 20 C=min in five representative cryobiological media to determine the kinetics of ice crystallization. The total magnitude of the latent heat release, L is found to be independent of the cooling rate. However, the experimental data show that at a fixed temperature, the fraction of heat released at higher cooling rates (5 and 20 C=min) is lower than that at 1 C=min for all the solutions studied. We present a model to predict the experimentally measured behavior based on the full set of heat and mass transport equations during the freezing process in a DSC sample pan. Analysis of the parameters relevant to the transport processes reveals that heat transport occurs much more rapidly than mass transport. The model also reveals the important physical parameters controlling the mass transport at the freezing interface i.e., diffusion limited and further elucidates the measured temperature and time dependence of the latent heat release. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Quay Cranes and Yard Trucks Scheduling Problem at Container Terminals
A bi-objective mathematical model is developed to simultaneously consider the quay crane and yard truck scheduling problems at container terminals. Main real-world assumptions, such as quay cranes with non-crossing constraints, quay cranes’ safety margins and precedence constraints are considered in this model. This integrated approach leads to better efficiency and productivity at container te...

The natural convection flow phenomena that occur inside an enclosed space are very interesting examples of complex fluid systems that may yield to analytical, empirical and numerical solutions, and many reports have looked into this basic problem. In the present study, heat transfer and fluid flow for natural convection in a horizontal rectangular container with a free surface are investigated ...
متن کاملAn Algorithm based on Predicting the Interface in Phase Change Materials
Phase change materials are substances that absorb and release thermal energy during the process of melting and freezing. This characteristic makes phase change material (PCM) a favourite choice to integrate it in buildings. Stephan problem including melting and solidification in PMC materials is an practical problem in many engineering processes. The position of the moving boundary, its veloci...
متن کاملAn Experimental and Theoretical Study of Freezing of Pure Aluminum
In this work, Boltzmann transform has been used to analyze the problem of freezing of pure Aluminum in semi-infinite domain. The uniqueness of solution (solidification front location) has been proved using the characteristics of the functions appeared in solution. The effect of density change on temperature distribution and errors resulting from ignoring this change have been investigated. The ...
متن کاملCombined diffusion-driven and convective flow in a tilted square container
Asymptotic analytical solutions are derived for the configuration posed by Quon [Phys. Fluids, 26, 632 (1983)] for diffusion-driven flow in a tilted square container when the diffusive parameter R is small. The key regions of the asymptotic structure are outlined and leading-order solutions are determined in most of those regions. The analysis follows that in Page & Johnson [J. Fluid Mech., 629...
