From Consensus to Atomic Broadcast: Time-Free Byzantine-Resistant Protocols without Signatures

چکیده
This paper proposes a stack of three Byzantine-resistant protocols aimed to be used in practical distributed systems: multi-valued consensus, vector consensus and atomic broadcast. These protocols are designed as successive transformations from one to another. The first protocol, multi-valued consensus, is implemented on top of a randomized binary consensus and a reliable broadcast protocol. The protocols share a set of important structural properties. First, they do not use digital signatures constructed with public-key cryptography, a well-known performance bottleneck in this kind of protocols. Second, they are time-free, i.e. they make no synchrony assumptions, since these assumptions are often vulnerable to subtle but effective attacks. Third, they are completely decentralized, thus avoiding the cost of detecting corrupt leaders. Fourth, they have optimal resilience, i.e. they tolerate the failure of f = (n− 1)/3 out of a total of n processes. In terms of time complexity, the multi-valued consensus protocol terminates in a constant expected number of rounds, while the vector consensus and atomic broadcast protocols haveO(f ) complexity. The paper also proves the equivalence between multi-valued consensus and atomic broadcast in the Byzantine failure model without signatures. A similar proof is given for the equivalence between multi-valued consensus and vector consensus. These two results have theoretical relevance since they show once more that consensus is a fundamental problem in distributed systems.

Secure and Efficient Asynchronous Broadcast Protocols
Reliable broadcast protocols are a fundamental building block for implementing replication in fault-tolerant distributed systems. This paper addresses secure service replication in an asynchronous environment with a static set of servers, where a malicious adversary may corrupt up to a threshold of servers and controls the network. We develop a formal model using concepts from modern cryptograp...
متن کاملGeneric early-deciding techniques for Consensus
Two techniques for obtaining efficient agreement protocols are described. Firstly, Consensus frameworks, such as Lambda [7], allow one to easily construct latencyoptimal agreement protocols tailored to particular settings. Unlike Lambda, our framework consists of rounds that do not have to terminate and thus are easier to implement. It can also handle Byzantine failures. Our second technique pr...
متن کاملSpecification of Dependable Trusted Third Parties
This document describes an architecture for secure service replication in an asynchronous network like the Internet, where a malicious adversary may corrupt some servers and control the network. The underlying protocols for Byzantine agreement and for atomic broadcast rely on recent developments in threshold cryptography. These assumptions are discussed in detail and compared to related work fr...
متن کاملState Machine Replication with Byzantine Faults
This chapter gives an introduction to protocols for state-machine replication in groups that are connected by asynchronous networks and whose members are subject to arbitrary or “Byzantine” faults. It explains the principles of such protocols and covers the following topics: broadcast primitives, distributed cryptosystems, randomized Byzantine agreement protocols, and atomic broadcast protocols.
متن کاملByzantine Fault-Tolerance with Commutative Commands
State machine replication is a popular approach to increasing the availability of computer services. While it has been largely studied in the presence of crash-stop failures and malicious failures, all existing state machine replication protocols that provide byzantine faulttolerance implement some variant of atomic broadcast. In this context, this paper makes two contributions. First, it prese...
