چکیده

We study the problem of fairly allocating indivisible goods to agents. Existing literature that focuses on the concept of envy inherently assumes that each agent can observe which goods the other agents are allocated before deciding if she envies them. In this paper, we propose a novel policy in which the principal hides from each agent the allocations made to the other agents. Each agent now attempts to infer these allocations, based on her knowledge of her own allocation, the mechanism used to divide the goods, and a prior over how the other agents value the goods, and then decides whether she envies them in expectation. We propose eight measures for the total envy in the system, and show that under six of them, our policy is guaranteed to (weakly) reduce the total envy, for every mechanism on every instance. Our experiments show reduction of envy on synthetic as well as real-world data.

Distributed Contingency Logic and Security

In information security, ignorance is not bliss. It is always stated that hiding the protocols (let the other be ignorant about it) does not increase the security of organizations. However, there are cases that ignorance creates protocols. In this paper, we propose distributed contingency logic, a proper extension of contingency (ignorance) logic. Intuitively, a formula is distributed contingen...

Is Ignorance Bliss?

ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise. " Thomas Gray If ignorance were bliss, there is information you would pay not to have. Hence the question is whether a rationally-behaving agent would ever do such a thing. This paper demonstrates that 1. A Bayesian agent with a proper, countably additive prior never maximizes utility by paying not to see cost-free data. 2. The definition of " cost-fre...

Ignorance is Bliss: The Effect of Increased Knowledge on Privacy Concerns and Internet Shopping Site Personalization Preferences

Studies have shown that people claim that privacy matters to them but then they often do things while browsing that are risky in terms of privacy. The seeming inconsistency between professed privacy concerns and risky behavior on the Internet may be more a consequence of ignorance rather than irrationality. It is possible that many people simply don’t understand the technologies, risks, and reg...

Phonetic ignorance is bliss: Inves phonetic information reduction o

Perception studies have long argued that phonetic confusions are more likely to happen across some phonetic features than other (e.g., place of articulation rather than manner) [1]. Similarly, we and others have noted that pronunciation variation occurs more frequently in unstressed syllables, and in syllable codas. This suggests that a phonetic information structure is at play, where for decod...
