Biostratigraphic Utility of the Upper Triassic Aetosaur Tecovasuchus (archosauria:stagonolepididae), an Index Taxon of St. Johnsian (adamanian:late Carnian) Time

چکیده
The recently recognized aetosaur Tecovasuchus chatterjeei Martz and Small occurs at several localities in lower Chinle Group strata across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Based on lithostratigraphic correlation and other vertebrate occurrences, all Tecovasuchus occurrences are of Adamanian age. Indeed, all occurrences are consistent with assignment to the St. Johnsian sub-land vertebrate faunachron of the Adamanian. We therefore recognize Tecovasuchus as an index taxon of Adamanian (St. Johnsian) time, and demonstrate that aetosaur biostratigraphy and biochronology is now more robust and precise than it was a decade ago.

An Aetosaur (reptilia:archosauria) from the Upper Triassic Chinle Group, Canyonlands National Park, Utah
A partial skeleton of the aetosaur Stagonolepis sp. is the first tetrapod body fossil recovered from Upper Triassic strata in Canyonlands National Park. The specimen consists of a partial tooth and numerous disarticulated vertebrae, ribs, and scutes found in the Blue Mesa Member of the Petrified Forest Formation (Chinle Group) near Upheaval Dome. Stagonolepis is an index taxon of the Adamanian ...
متن کاملMicro- and Small Vertebrate Biostratigraphy and Biochronology of the Upper Triassic Chinle Group, Southwestern Usa
A long-term goal of vertebrate biostratigraphers is to construct a microvertebrate biostratigraphy for lower Mesozoic rocks that complements and extends the mammal-based biostratigraphy in place for Upper Cretaceous-Recent deposits. Here we report substantial progress toward achieving this goal based on the distribution of microvertebrate fossils in the Upper Triassic Chinle Group of the wester...
متن کاملKrzyzanowskisaurus, a New Name for a Probable Ornithischian Dinosaur from the Upper Triassic Chinle Group, Arizona and New Mexico, Usa
Recent discoveries have demonstrated that Revueltosaurus callenderi Hunt is not an ornithischian dinosaur, so it is probably not congeneric with the putative ornithischian Revueltosaurus hunti Heckert. Revueltosaurus Hunt, 1989 is the senior generic name, so I propose here the generic name Krzyzanowskisaurus for “Revueltosaurus” hunti. Because the teeth of K. hunti appear more derived than R. c...
متن کاملA New Aetosaur from the Upper Triassic (adamanian: Carnian) of Arizona
Adamanasuchus eisenhardtae is a new genus and species of aetosaur from the Upper Triassic (Adamanian: late Carnian) Blue Mesa Member of the Petrified Forest Formation (Chinle Group) in the Petrified Forest National Park, east-central Arizona. Known from part of its dorsal armor, caudal vertebrae, and a femur, A. eisenhardtae is distinguished by relatively narrow and arched paramedian osteoderms...

—Topographically low exposures of Upper Triassic Chinle Group strata near St. Johns, Arizona, overlie the Middle Triassic Moenkopi Formation and can be assigned to four formation-rank units. These are, in ascending order, the Zuni Mountains (= “mottled strata”), Shinarump, Bluewater Creek (= “Mesa Redondo”), and Petrified Forest formations. Petrified Forest Formation strata in the vicinity of S...
