چکیده
The article entitled “Aplastic Anemia Associated with Oral Terbinafine: A Case Report and Review of the Literature”, written by Kantarcıoğlu et al. and published in a recent issue of your journal, was quite interesting [1]. Here we would like to emphasize some relevant points. In the assessment of 425 cases by van der Klauw et al., the most common causes of drug-related agranulocytosis or neutropenia were, in order, dipyrone, mianserin, sulfasalazine, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, penicillins, cimetidine, thiouracil groups, and phenylbutazone [2]. Terbinafine was not included in this list. Neutropenia associated with terbinafine is more common in women, which may be due to more fungal infections encountered and more drug usage for this purpose. To know the MCV and vitamin B12 levels in the presented patients would be useful. In our case, a patient presented with neutropenia due to terbinafine. A 64-year-old man with a history of onychomycosis presented with neutropenia after starting terbinafine at 250 mg/day [3]. In conclusion, routine hematological monitoring is not indicated, but patients should be informed of this potentially life-threatening adverse reaction. Conflict of Interest Statement The author of this paper has no conflict of interest, including specific financial interests, relationships, and/ or affiliations relevant to the subject matter or materials included in this manuscript.

Successful treatment of immunoglobulin D myeloma by bortezomib and dexamethasone therapy.
Immunoglobulin D (IgD) myeloma is a rare subtype and it is widely accepted as an aggressive disease. Here, we report a 66-year-old woman with IgD myeloma who had anemia, lumbago, multiple osteolytic lesions and hypercalcemia. The patient refused a blood transfusion because of her beliefs, so we administered bortezomib and dexamethasone (BD) after high-dose dexamethasone therapy. Marked improvem...
متن کاملUse of leucocyte alkaline phosphatase (LAP) score in differentiating malignant from benign paraproteinaemias.
The leucocyte alkaline phosphatase (LAP) score of peripheral blood neutrophils was examined in 20 patients with multiple myeloma and compared with the score in 18 patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). The mean (95% confidence limit) LAP score in those with multiple myeloma was 186 (169-218) compared with 92 (64-120) in the MGUS group. In the multiple myeloma g...
متن کاملHGF inhibits BMP-induced osteoblastogenesis: possible implications for the bone disease of multiple myeloma.
The bone disease in multiple myeloma is caused by an uncoupling of bone formation from bone resorption. A key difference between patients with and patients without osteolytic lesion is that the latter have fewer and less active osteoblasts. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is often produced by myeloma cells and is found at high concentrations in the bone marrow of patients with multiple myeloma. ...
متن کاملBone-Specific Alkaline Phosphatase Levels among Patients with Multiple Myeloma Receiving Various Therapy Options
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the impact of the different therapy regimens used in multiple myeloma (MM) on bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP) levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and thirteen patients with MM were included in the study. Patients were grouped according to the regimens they received, as follows: group 1, melphalan and prednisolone (MP); group 2, vincris...
متن کاملAlkaline phosphatase variation during carfilzomib treatment is associated with best response in multiple myeloma patients.
The ubiquitin-proteasome pathway regulates bone formation through osteoblast differentiation. We analyzed variation alkaline phosphatase (ALP) during carfilzomib treatment. Data from 38 patients enrolled in the PX-171-003 and 29 patients in PX-171-004 studies, for patients with relapsed/refractory myeloma, were analyzed. All patients received 20 mg/m(2) of carfilzomib on Days 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, an...
متن کاملUse of murine myeloma protein M467 for detecting Salmonella spp. in milk.
This investigation introduces the use of an immunoglobulin A mouse myeloma protein for the detection of Salmonella spp. in milk. The immunoglobulin A protein M467 reacts with flagellin from a wide variety of serotypes. Two assays were developed which used an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and M467. Alkaline phosphatase was conjugated to M467 (M467-PH), and the presence of Salmonella ...
