Cross-Layer Scheme to Control Contention Window for Per-Flow in Asymmetric Multi-Hop Networks

چکیده
The IEEE 802.11 MAC standard for wireless ad hoc networks adopts Binary Exponential Back-off (BEB) mechanism to resolve bandwidth contention between stations. BEB mechanism controls the bandwidth allocation for each station by choosing a back-off value from one to CW according to the uniform random distribution, where CW is the contention window size. However, in asymmetric multi-hop networks, some stations are disadvantaged in opportunity of access to the shared channel and may suffer severe throughput degradation when the traffic load is large. Then, the network performance is degraded in terms of throughput and fairness. In this paper, we propose a new cross-layer scheme aiming to solve the per-flow unfairness problem and achieve good throughput performance in IEEE 802.11 multi-hop ad hoc networks. Our cross-layer scheme collects useful information from the physical, MAC and link layers of own station. This information is used to determine the optimal Contention Window (CW) size for per-station fairness. We also use this information to adjust CW size for each flow in the station in order to achieve per-flow fairness. Performance of our cross-layer scheme is examined on various asymmetric multi-hop network topologies by using Network Simulator (NS-2). key words: cross-layer, per-flow/per-station fairness, bandwidth utilization, multi-hop wireless, IEEE 802.11, back-off algorithm, asymmetric topology

Cooperation between Channel Access Control and TCP Rate Adaptation in Multi-Hop Ad Hoc Networks
In this paper, we propose a new cross-layer scheme Cooperation between channel Access control and TCP Rate Adaptation (CATRA) aiming to manage TCP flow contention in multi-hop ad hoc network. In CATRA scheme, we collect useful information from MAC and physical layers to estimate channel utilization of the station. Based on this information, we adjust Contention Window (CW ) size to control the ...

IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol for medium access control in wireless Local Area Networks (LANs) is the de facto standard for wireless ad hoc networks, but it does not necessarily satisfy QoS requirement by users such as fairness among flows or throughput of flows. In this paper, we propose a new scheme aiming to solve per-flow fairness problem and achieves good throughput performance in IEEE 802.11 m...
متن کاملA Cross-layer Contention Based Synchronous MAC Protocol for Transmission Delay Reduction in Multi-Hop WSNs
Recently designed cross-layer contention based synchronous MAC protocols like the PRMAC protocol, for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) enable a node to schedule multi-hop transmission of multiple data packets in a cycle. However, these systems accommodate both the request-to-send data process and the confirmation-to-send data process in the same data transmission scheduling window (i.e. data win...
متن کاملProviding forwarding assurance in multi-hop wireless networks
The Assured Forwarding (AF) service in a differentiated services network offers different levels of forwarding assurance for IP packets. In the wired Internet, the AF service is implemented as a queue management scheme associated with a drop policy in each router. In multi-hop wireless networks, however, queue management in each node is not enough to provide service differentiation globally sin...
متن کاملA Unified NET-MAC-PHY Cross-layer Framework for Performance Evaluation of Multi-hop Ad hoc WLANs
Most of the existing works have been evaluated the performance of 802.11 multihop networks by considering the MAC layer or network layer separately. Knowing the nature of the multi-hop ad hoc networks, many factors in different layers are crucial for study the performance of MANET. In this paper we present a new analytic model for evaluating average end-to-end throughput in IEEE 802.11e multiho...
