چکیده

Airborne passive-microwave signatures collected in Northern Finland during EMAC-95 are analyzed with the emphasis on forested areas and dry snow conditions. The microwave signatures cover the 6.8–18.7-GHz frequency range and were acquired at both vertical and horizontal polarizations. The analysis is carried out with respect to the forest-stem volume data and comprises three different snow-depth situations. Emissivities approach saturation limit with the increasing stem volume. At 10.65 GHz, the saturation level was found to be linearly related to the snow-water equivalent. On the basis of passive-microwave measurements, an empirical forest transmissivity model is developed. The model is valid at vertical polarization 50 incidence angle, and it accounts for microwave frequency and forest-stem volume effects in the range of 6.8–94 GHz and 0–150 m/ha, respectively.

Observations of L- and C-band Backscatter and a Semi-empirical Backscattering Model Approach from a Forest-snow-ground System

Observations of Land C-band backscatter from snow cover are presented at all polarizations. Airborne passive-microwave data was collected in Northern Finland during EMAC’95 (European Multi-sensor Airborne Campaign-95). The measurements cover the 6.8–18.7 GHz frequency range with both vertical and horizontal polarizations. The empirical SAR data were acquired by EMISAR of Technical University of...

Investigating Relationships Between Land-Cover, Forest Structure, and In-Situ and Airborne Passive Microwave Snow Water Equivalent in a Boreal Forest Environment

The Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) has developed a suite of land-cover sensitive algorithms to extract snow water equivalent (SWE) estimates from satellite passive microwave brightness temperatures. In the boreal forest, however, accurate passive microwave SWE retrievals using the MSC coniferous forest algorithm are hampered by consistent under-estimation. In February 2003, a collection...

Remote sensing of snow with passive microwave radiometers

This report considers passive microwave radiometry and its application for satellite remote sensing of snow at a global scale. The microwaves observed from a dry snow pack are emitted from the ground beneath the snow. The bulk effect of the snow cover on the micro‐ waves is that the measured brightness temperature will decrease. This depends on the mass of the snow (snow water equivalent – SWE)...

Mapping random and systematic errors of satellite-derived snow water equivalent observations in Eurasia

Passive microwave sensors onboard satellites can provide global snow water equivalent (SWE) observations day or night, even under cloudy conditions. However, there are both systematic (bias) and random errors associated with the passive microwave measurements. While these errors are well known, they have thus far not been adequately quantified. In this study, unbiased SWE maps, random error map...

Reflectance Modeling of Snow-Covered Forests in Hilly Terrain

Seasonal snow covers large land areas of the Earth. Information about the snow extent in these regions is important for climate studies and water resource management. A linear spectral mixture model for snow-covered forests (the SnowFor model) has previously been developed for flat terrain. The SnowFor model includes reflectance components for snow, trees and snow-free ground. In this paper, th...
