Adsorption isotherms of water in Li–, Na–, and K–montmorillonite by molecular simulation

چکیده
A biased Monte Carlo method for the insertion of water in dense clay–water systems is presented. The use of this algorithm results in a considerable increase of the success rate of insertion attempts. It allows us to compute water adsorption isotherms up to high water densities, where the conventional Monte Carlo scheme fails. The isotherms were calculated by a combination of molecular dynamics and grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulation for Li–, Na–, and K– montmorillonite at a fixed d(001) spacing of 12.0 Å. At low water pressure, the degree of clay hydration is governed by the type of counterion, Li–montmorillonite having the highest water content. Hydrogen bonding between water molecules is absent. Li and Na are small enough to be organized in two layers close to the clay mineral surfaces, whereas K is mainly located in the midplane. In both cases, the water molecules primarily reside in the midplane of the interlayer. Increasing the water pressure leads to water adsorption at higher energy sites closer to the surface, i.e., coordinating to the structural OH groups in the hexagonal cavities. A hydrogen bond network is formed in the clay interlayer. This points to water condensation and leads to a sharp increase in the clay water content. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1386432#

TEXTURAL AND HYDRATION PROPERTIES OF A SYNTHETIC MONTMORILLONITE COMPARED WITH A NATURAL NA-EXCHANGED CLAY ANALOGUE Authors
An aluminous montmorillonite has been synthesized at hydrothermal conditions (623 K, 120 MPa) and compared to the natural Na-exchanged Wyoming montmorillonite (Na-SWy2). The synthetic product is characterized by a high cation exchange capacity (83 meq/100g) and ethylene glycol specific surface area (764 m 2 /g) similar to Na-SWy2 but with a higher purity with one crystalline phase. Compacted sm...
متن کاملA Molecular Simulation of Natural Gas Dehydration by 3A Zeolite Nanostructure
The adsorption and separation properties of 3A zeolite are investigated by using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation. To obtain the adsorption isotherms of water, methyl mercaptan, and methane on 3A zeolite, COMPASS Force Filed is used. The adsorption isotherms of the pure components and the ternary mixtures of water, methyl mercaptan, and methane on 3A zeolites are calculated. The Si...
متن کاملEffects of Water Content on SO2/N2 Binary Adsorption Capacities of 13X and 5A Molecular Sieve, Experiment, Simulation, and Modeling
In this work, SO2 adsorption on 13X and 5A was explored at different concentrations, and the results were compared to molecular simulation and models. The adsorbent saturation tests were performed at four different concentrations of 250, 500, 750, and 1000 ppm, and it was observed that saturation would take more time for higher SO2 concentrations. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo method was used for...

-Exchange reactions of Na-montmorillonite with zirconyl chloride solutions give products with basal spacings near 18 A which are stable to 500~ and have surface areas of the order of 300-400 m2/g. The Na ions are exchanged with tetrameric hydroxy cations [Zr4(OH)I( nH~O] 2+. The high surface area is attributed to the porosity formed by stable zirconium oxide" pillars" formed by dehydroxylatlon ...
