Familiarity and nameability do not affect picture detection MURIEL

چکیده
It has recently been suggested that the familiarity ofa stimuluscanaffect early sensory processesinvolved in their detection. Thishypothesis was tested in a detection task using fragmented forms varying in familiarity and their structural properties but equivalent in their spatial frequency content. No effect of familiarity or structurewas found on the detectability of the stimuli. Possible reasons for the familiarity effect observed in previous detection studies are discussed.

Only stimulus energy affects the detectability of visual forms and objects
A detection task was performed using different pictographic representations ofobjectsinorder to test the hypothesis that high-level information (familiarity) may influence detection thresholds. The stimuli were five versions of forms: outline drawings of objects, silhouettes, and three fragmented versions of forms derived from the outlines. The stimuli varied on two parameters: their nameability...

The emergence of equivalence relations and the role of overall verbal competence and stimulus nameability and familiarity in this regard were investigated across 3 experiments involving 15 children diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as 3 typically developing children. The experimental sequence comprised 4 identical stages, each with 4 phases. The relationship between verba...
متن کاملReuniting Categories, Language, and Perception
Familiar objects are more easily processed than unfamiliar objects. Familiar objects are also generally meaningful, and comprise members of named categories. Previous work examining familiarity effects in visual processing has confounded perceptual experience with meaningfulness and with nameability. The present experiments use the visual search paradigm to (1) manipulate category membership wh...

The visual system is tuned for rapid detection of faces, with the fastest choice saccade to a face at 100 ms. Familiar faces have a more robust representation than do unfamiliar faces, and are detected faster in the absence of awareness and with reduced attentional resources. Faces of family and close friends become familiar over a protracted period involving learning the unique visual appearan...
متن کاملImpact of Dynamic Assessment on Iranian EFL Learners' Picture-cued Writing
Abstract In Iran, most English teachers’ method of teaching writing is merely to have students do some writing exercises or simply to give them writing tests without any instruction, but writing is not an easy task for students, and teachers should be able to do more to facilitate their students’ writing. One of the ways to aid writing is dynamic assessment via graduated prompt. The graduated p...
