چکیده

Visual categorization and learning of visual categories exhibit early onset, however the underlying mechanisms of early categorization are not well understood. The main limiting factor for examining these mechanisms is the limited duration of infant cooperation (10-15 minutes), which leaves little room for multiple test trials. With its tight link to visual attention, eye tracking is a promising method for getting access to the mechanisms of category learning. But how should researchers decide which aspects of the rich eye tracking data to focus on? To date, eye tracking variables are generally handpicked, often resulting in biases of the eye tracking data. Here, we propose an automated method for selecting eye tracking variables based on their usefulness to discriminate learners from non-learners of visual categories. We presented infants and adults with a category learning task and tracked their eye movements. We then extracted an over-complete set of eye tracking variables encompassing durations, probabilities, latencies, and the order of fixations and saccadic eye movements. We applied the statistical technique of ANOVA ranking to identifying those variables among this large set that covaried with the learner/nonlearner label. We were able to identify learners and nonlearners above chance level using linear SVM and the top eye tracking variables.

The Effect of Labels on Visual Attention: An Eye Tracking Study

The effects of language on categorization are well documented; however, underlying mechanisms are under debate. According to one account, words facilitate categorization by highlighting commonalities among labeled objects. Although there is some behavioral evidence consistent with this claim, research remains limited for whether labels can direct infants’ attention to corresponding visual featu...

Assessment and Comparison of Visual Skills among Footballers

Like bodily, physiological, and psychological skills which are commonly assessed in professional sport, assessment of visual skills is also of high importance. In this regard, and in order to organize teams efficiently, the skills of each player, considering his/her post in the pitch, should be developed for superiority over the opponent. The present study attempts to clarify if there is a mean...

Evaluation of Attention Bias in Morphine and Methamphetamine Abusers towards Emotional Scenes during Early Abstinence: An Eye-Tracking Study

Introduction: We hypothesized that inappropriate attention during the period of abstinence in individuals with substance use disorder can result in an inadequate perception of emotion and unsuitable reaction to emotional scenes. The main aim of this research was to evaluate the attentional bias towards emotional images in former substance abusers and compare it to healthy adults. Methods:...
