Dual-low-frequency Radar for Soil Moisture under Vegetation Andat-depth
نویسندگان
چکیده
To address a key science research topic for the global water and energy cycle, namely measuring soil moisture under substantial vegetation canopies and to useful depths, we have developed a concept for a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system operating simultaneously at UHF and VHF frequencies. We are currently prototyping key technology items that enable this concept under the NASA Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) Instrument Incubator Program (IIP). This presentation describes the technological challenges and innovations we are addressing to enable the implementation of this instrument and its integration into a future Earthorbiting mission. The starting technology readiness level (TRL) for this project is 3, and the exit TRL is 56.

A Synergistic Methodology for Soil Moisture Estimation in an Alpine Prairie Using Radar and Optical Satellite Data
This paper presents a microwave/optical synergistic methodology to retrieve soil moisture in an alpine prairie. The methodology adequately represents the scattering behavior of the vegetation-covered area by defining the scattering of the vegetation and the soil below. The Integral Equation Method (IEM) was employed to determine the backscattering of the underlying soil. The modified Water Clou...
متن کاملIrrigated Grassland Monitoring Using a Time Series of TerraSAR-X and COSMO-SkyMed X-Band SAR Data
The objective of this study was to analyze the sensitivity of radar signals in the X-band in irrigated grassland conditions. The backscattered radar signals were analyzed according to soil moisture and vegetation parameters using linear regression models. A time series of radar (TerraSAR-X and COSMO-SkyMed) and optical (SPOT and LANDSAT) images was acquired at a high temporal frequency in 2013 ...
متن کاملGround Penetrating Radar (gpr) Analysis of Soil Moisture within Different Landuses in an Agriculture Landscape, in Georgia, Us
Soil moisture is a critical process in the water cycle and its assessment is of paramount importance to forecast changes in the water balance of a region. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology overcomes the limitations of point data by producing a tridimensional view of subsurface characteristics with a large economy of time, logistic, data processing and analysis. The purpose of this resea...
متن کاملA Change Detection Algorithm for Retrieving High-resolution Surface Soil Moisture from Smap L-band Radar and Radiometer Observations
Soil moisture is a critical hydrological variable that links the terrestrial water, energy and carbon cycles. Global and regional observations of soil moisture are needed to estimate the water and energy fluxes at the land surface, to quantify the net carbon flux in boreal landscapes, to enhance weather and climate forecast skill and to develop improved flood prediction and drought monitoring c...
متن کاملSoil Moisture Retrieval Using Data Cube Representation of Radar Scattering
A time-series algorithm is proposed to retrieve surface (from surface down to 1 m depth) soil moisture using the simulated radar data. The time-series approach uses co-polarized (V V and HH) backscattering coefficient (σ) values. Temporal averaging is applied to reduce the radar measurement noise. To the extent that the surface roughness does not change within the time-series window, the reduct...
