A comparative pharmacologic-histologic study of slow and twitch fibers in the superior rectus muscle of the rabbit.

چکیده
The superior rectus muscle of the rabbit can be separated into two plates: One is comprised, solely of F elder struktur ("slow") fibers and the other almost exclusively of Fibrillenstruktur ("twitch") fibers. Responses of isolated portions of the two muscle types to acetylcholine were compared under identical experimental conditions. The results indicate that the Felderstruktur fibers are responsible for tonic contractions of the extraocular muscles of the rabbit. It is reasonable to assume that they serve the same function in the extraocular muscles of other mammals. Felderstruktur fibers, although striated, demonstrate certain histologic and pharmacologic characteristics, ivhich are intermediate between those of striated and smooth muscle.

Histopathologic Changes of Extraocular Mus-cle Fibers after Injection of Botulinum Toxin
Background: Use of botulinum toxin is becoming a popular way in treatment of some forms of strabismus. To evaluate the morphological changes in the orbital surface layer muscles of the rabbit eye following a single injection of botulinum toxin. Methods: 10 white Dutch rabbits weighing 2–3 kg received either 10 units (group 1; n=5) or 20 units (group 2; n=5) of botulinum toxin into the superior r...
متن کاملThe Effect of Intensive Endurance Activity on Myocyte Enhancer Factor 2C Gene Expression of Slow and Fast Twitch Muscles in Male Wistar Rats: An Experimental Study
Background and Objectives: Myocyte enhancer factor 2c activates the genes of the slow-twitch muscle, the muscle which plays role in endurance activity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a program of intensive endurance activity on MEF2c gene expression in fast and slow twitch skeletal muscles in wistar rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 14 mal...
متن کاملEffect of progressive resistance exercise on β1 integrin and vinculin protein levels in slow-and fast-twitch skeletal muscles of male rats
Introduction: Skeletal muscle is a flexible and ever changing tissue and the role of costameric proteins in its response to different stimuli is not well defined. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of progressive resistance exercise on β1 integrin and vinculin proteins in fast and slow twitch skeletal muscles of male rats. Methods: Twelve male Wistar rats (weight: 298±5.2 gr...
متن کاملMorphological classification and comparison of suboccipital muscle fiber characteristics
In an attempt to clarify the function of the suboccipital muscles, we performed morphological observation of the suboccipital muscles for variations in the muscle belly and compared the morphology of their muscle fibers in terms of cross-sectional area by immunostaining with anti-myosin heavy chain antibodies. The cadavers of 25 Japanese individuals were used: 22 for morphological examinations ...
متن کاملMotoneurons of twitch and nontwitch extraocular muscle fibers in the abducens, trochlear, and oculomotor nuclei of monkeys.
Eye muscle fibers can be divided into two categories: nontwitch, multiply innervated muscle fibers (MIFs), and twitch, singly innervated muscle fibers (SIFs). We investigated the location of motoneurons supplying SIFs and MIFs in the six extraocular muscles of monkeys. Injections of retrograde tracers into eye muscles were placed either centrally, within the central SIF endplate zone; in an int...
