چکیده

In this paper we describe the design, implementation and evaluation of a programmable architecture for profiling, composing and deploying handoff services. We argue that future wireless access networks should be built on a foundation of open programmable networking allowing for the dynamic deployment and management of new mobile and wireless services. Customizing handoff control and mobility management in this manner calls for advances in software and networking technologies in order to respond to specific radio, mobility, and quality of service requirements of future wireless service providers. Two applications of programmable handoff are presented. First, we describe ‘multi-service’ access networks, which are capable of simultaneously supporting multiple styles of handoff over the same physical infrastructure. Second, we discuss ‘reflective handoff’ which allows mobile devices to roam between heterogeneous networks.

An Empirical Analysis of Handoff Performance for SIP, Mobile IP, and SCTP Protocols

Over the last decade, we have witnessed a growing interest in the design and deployment of various network architectures and protocols aimed at supporting mobile users as they move across different types of networks. One of the goals of these emerging network solutions is to provide uninterrupted, seamless connectivity to mobile users giving them the ability to access information anywhere, anyt...

Handoff Mechanisms in Cellular IP: Enhancement into the Indirect Handoff Mechanism

Mobile IP is now the standard for supporting mobility in IP networks. It provides seamless mobility by hiding the change of IP address when a mobile host moves between IP subnets. Nevertheless, Mobile IP is not designed to support fast handoff and seamless mobility in handoff-intensive environments. Several micro-mobility protocols have been proposed to support host mobility with frequent hando...

An Adaptive Handoff Algorithm with Accumulated Attempts of User Mobility for Supporting QoS in Wireless Cellular Networks

As the number of mobile users in cellular systems increases, the user mobility becomes the dominating factor for guaranteeing quality of services (QoS). In order to support QoS for mobiles in cellular systems, the concept of accumulated user mobility is combined with the handoff algorithm to reduce the amount of reserving channels (codes) for handoff calls and increase the total carried traffic...
