2 More on the determination of the coronal heating function from Yohkoh data

چکیده
Two recent works have analyzed a solar large and steady coronal loop observed with Yohkoh/SXT in two filter passbands to infer the distribution of the heating along it. Priest et al. (2000) modelled the distribution of the temperature obtained from filter ratio method with an analytical approach, and concluded that the heating was uniform along the loop. Aschwanden (2001) found that a uniform heating led to an unreasonably large plasma column depth along the line of sight, and, using a two component loop model, that a footpoint-heated model loop (with a minor cool component) yields more acceptable physical solutions. We revisit the analysis of the same loop system, considering conventional hydro-static single loop models with uniformly distributed heating, and with heating localized at the footpoints and at the apex, and an unstructured background contribution extrapolated from the region below the analyzed loop. The flux profiles synthesized from the loop models have been compared in detail with those observed in both filter passbands with and without background subtraction; we find that background-subtracted data are fitted with acceptable statistical significance by a model of relatively hot loop (∼ 3.7 MK) heated at the apex, with a column depth ∼ 1/10 of the loop length. In discussing our results, we put warnings on the importance of aspects of data analysis and modeling, such as considering diffuse background emission in complex loop regions.

Determination of the length of coronal loops from the decay of X-ray flares I. Solar flares observed with Yohkoh SXT
We show how to estimate the size of spatially unresolved solar and stellar coronal flaring regions from the X-ray light curve and time-resolved temperature and emission measure values during the flare decay. Bymeans of extensive hydrodynamic modeling of decaying flaring loops, we propose and test a relationship between the decay time of the light curve in the band of a specific instrument and t...
متن کاملObservations of Solar Flare Doppler Shift Oscillations with the Bragg Crystal Spectrometer on Yohkoh
Oscillations in solar coronal loops appear to be a common phenomenon. Transverse and longitudinal oscillations have been observed with both the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer and Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope imaging experiments. Damped Doppler shift oscillations have been observed in emission lines from ions formed at flare temperatures with the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements o...
متن کاملForward Modeling of Active Region Coronal Emissions: II. Implications for Coronal Heating
In Paper I, we introduced and tested a method for predicting solar active region coronal emissions using magnetic field measurements and a chosen heating relationship. Here, we apply this forward-modeling technique to 10 active regions observed with the Mees Solar Observatory Imaging Vector Magnetograph and the Yohkoh Soft X-ray Telescope. We produce synthetic images of each region using four p...
متن کاملPhysics of Coronal Loops
Coronal loops are the basic elements of the solar corona and are responsible for the totality of the coronal X-ray emission. Loop physics is therefore important to understand the structure, heating, dynamics and evolution of the corona. A well-established and useful approach to study loop physics has been the detailed hydrodynamic modeling of the connned plasma, coupled to the synthesis of obse...
متن کاملThe Sun as an X { ray Star I : Deriving the Emission Measure Distribution vs . Temperature of the WholeSolar Corona from the Yohkoh / SXT
The scope of this work is to obtain the emission measure distributions vs. temperature, EM(T), of the whole solar corona from Yohkoh/SXT images. As discussed in Paper II, the EM(T) is our starting point to study the Sun as an X{ray star. To this purpose, we need to extract as much information as possible from the Yohkoh/SXT data covering the whole range of the Yohkoh/SXT temperature sensitivity...
