Three Dimensional Analysis of Caloric Nystagmus and Effect of Visual Suppression in Cats

چکیده
Background and Objectives:The caloric test is considered to be one of the most sensitive parameters in the diagnosis of peripheral vestibular disorders, although it can test only the function of the lateral semicircular canals. In this study, the authors measured the eye movements and visual suppression of caloric nystagmus in cats three dimensionally using a magnetic search coil system. Materials and Method:Three-dimensional (3-D) eye movement responses to an ice water caloric stimulus were studied with the six normal cats positioned in an upright position (lateral semicircular canal vertical). Visual suppression of caloric nystagmus was also investigated. Results:All animals showed eye movements in the horizontal, torsional and vertical planes. Of the three nystagmus components, the horizontal component showed the fastest eye velocity during caloric stimulation. In light, a slight, but certain degree of visual suppression in was recognized in cats. Conclusion:The caloric nystagmus response involves a complex eye movement response comprising the horizontal, vertical and torsional nystagmus components. The 3D analysis system with a magnetic search coil is useful to investigate the eye movement during caloric stimulation when the cat is awake. (Korean J Otolaryngol 2001;44:470-5)

THE EFFECT OF ELECTROSTIMULATION ON CALORIC-INDUCED NYSTAGMUS: A PRELIMINARY STUDY
The objective of this study was to describe the role of electrical stimulation in controlling peripheral vertigo. In a prospective study on 13 healthy volunteers, nystagmus was induced with caloric stimulation and the interval of nystagmus disappearance was recorded. This time indicates the basal response of vestibular end-organ. After caloric irrigation, pulsed signal was applied for each...
متن کاملCaloric-eye tracking pattern test: I. Visual suppression and the possibility of simplified differential diagnosis between peripheral and central vertigo.
During the examination of patients who complain of vertigo or who have equilibrium disorders, it is often difficult to determine the etiology of the disorders, that is, to determine whether it is dependent on a peripheral or central vestibular disorder. To attempt to guess the etiology in these cases, we devised a new method: the caloric eye-tracking pattern test. In normal subjects and in pat...

To elucidate cortical correlates of vestibulo-ocular re ̄ex (VOR) modulation, we observed cortical activation during ®xation suppression and habituation of caloric vestibular nystagmus in 12 normal subjects, using PET. Signi®cant positive correlation between regional cerebral blood ̄ow (rCBF) and slow phase eye velocity of caloric nystagmus was observed in the middle and posterior insula, inferio...
متن کاملEffects of three steroidal compounds on oestrus suppression in queens
Pregnancy prevention raises much concern to many pet owners. Female cats usually show undesirable behaviour during oestrus. Nowadays, researchers try to explore the reliable and effective ways to prevent oestrus signs in queens. The results of their studies prove that hormone therapy is probably one of the most reliable methods for this purpose. The aim of our study was to compare the effect of...
