چکیده

Dear Sir, We believe the article by Clements et al. in the May issue of the JLO to be misleading, in suggesting that the improvement in sensorineural hearing loss in Wegener's granulomatosis treated with combined cytotoxicimmunosuppressive therapy is an unusual finding. In the discussion they state there has been only one similar report (Peiterson and Carlsen, 1965). However, we should like to draw attention to two publications indicating that improvement is found in the majority of patients. McCaffrey et al. (1980) report nine patients with sensorineural hearing loss of which five had complete or partial recovery with combined treatment. Ilium and Thorling (1982), who were primarily interested in conductive loss, also record improvement in 'nearly all' in the series of thirteen patients of whom 'most had major sensory hearing loss'. Improvement in sensorineural hearing loss is therefore to be expected with combined cytotoxic-immunosuppressive therapy. Yours faithfully, G. E. Murty J. P. Otologic Manifestations and Progression in Patients with Wegener’s granulomatosis: A Survey in 55 Patients

Introduction Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA; also known as Wegener's granulomatosis) is a primary systemic vasculitis involving the ear, nose and throat system (ENT) and lower respiratory tract. Because of the lack of knowledge regarding the clinical findings of GPA due to the limited number of studies, the current study was designed to investigate the prevalence and nature of the otolog...

[A case of Wegener's granulomatosis].

We present a case of Wegener's granulomatosis in which otitis media symptoms masked the disease in first phases. Progressive, unilateral hearing loss, almost deafness, together with facial nerve paresis allowed us to make proper diagnosis and apply therapy.

[Otolaryngological manifestations of Wegener's disease].

INTRODUCTION Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is characterised by granulomatous vasculitis of the airway and glomerulonephritis. Since its first description, important advances have occurred in diagnosis and treatment; however, the aetiology remains unknown. Involvement of the head and neck region can often occur as the first and only manifestation. The aim of this study was to determine the frequ...

A disease activity score for ENT involvement in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's).

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Accurate assessment of disease activity in patients with otorhinolaryngological manifestations of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's) (ENT/GPA) is necessary for treatment decisions and clinical trials. We have designed a disease activity score (ENT/GPA DAS) for this purpose. STUDY DESIGN A prospective cross-sectional study. METHODS GPA patients seen in a terti...
