چکیده

Perceptual rivalry, which implies binocular rivalry and ambiguous figure perception, is characterized by perceptual alternation between two stable interpretations of an unchanging stimulus. It is well known that the time intervals of alternation follow a gamma distribution (GD) commonly in various kinds of perceptual rivalry. A critical question is whether the GD reflects some general mechanism of this phenomenon. In quantitative investigations of distributions of the alternation intervals, we found that a shapedetermining parameter α of GD took a natural number, indicating that the alternation is caused by a discrete stochastic process of the brain. In an extended version of the same experiment, we confirmed that the same property was obtained for each of the various kinds of stimuli. Therefore it is concluded that the GD reflects the general mechanism of perceptual rivalry, that is, the discrete stochastic process underlying perceptual alternation.

Dichoptic masking and binocular rivalry share common perceptual dynamics.

Two of the strongest tools to manipulate visual awareness of potentially salient stimuli are binocular rivalry and dichoptic masking. Binocular rivalry is induced by presenting incompatible images to the two eyes over prolonged periods of time, leading to an alternating perception of the two images. Dichoptic masking is induced when two images are presented once in rapid succession, leading to ...

A common oscillator for perceptual rivalries?

Perceptual rivalry is an oscillation of conscious experience that takes place despite univarying. if ambiguous, sensory input. Much current interest is focused on the controversy over the neural site of binocular rivalry, a variety of perceptual rivalry for which a number of different cortical regions have been implicated. Debate continues over the relative role of higher levels of processing c...

Monocular rivalry exhibits three hallmarks of binocular rivalry: Evidence for common processes

Binocular rivalry occurs when different images are presented one to each eye: the images are visible only alternately. Monocular rivalry occurs when different images are presented both to the same eye: the clarity of the images fluctuates alternately. Could both sorts of rivalry reflect the operation of a general visual mechanism for dealing with perceptual ambiguity? We report four experiments...

How does binocular rivalry emerge from cortical mechanisms of 3-D vision?

Under natural viewing conditions, a single depthful percept of the world is consciously seen. When dissimilar images are presented to corresponding regions of the two eyes, binocular rivalry may occur, during which the brain consciously perceives alternating percepts through time. How do the same brain mechanisms that generate a single depthful percept of the world also cause perceptual bistabi...

Fusion and Rivalry Are Dependent on the Perceptual Meaning of Visual Stimuli

We view the world with two eyes and yet are typically only aware of a single, coherent image. Arguably the simplest explanation for this is that the visual system unites the two monocular stimuli into a common stream that eventually leads to a single coherent sensation. However, this notion is inconsistent with the well-known phenomenon of rivalry; when physically different stimuli project to t...
