Conforming and divergence-free Stokes elements on general triangular meshes

چکیده
We present a family of conforming finite elements for the Stokes problem on general triangular meshes in two dimensions. The lowest order case consists of enriched piecewise linear polynomials for the velocity and piecewise constant polynomials for the pressure. We show that the elements satisfy the inf-sup condition and converges optimally for both the velocity and pressure. Moreover, the pressure space is exactly the divergence of the corresponding space for the velocity. Therefore the discretely divergence free functions are divergence free pointwise. We also show how the proposed elements are related to a class of C1 elements through the use of a discrete de Rham complex.

Stokes Complexes and the Construction of Stable Finite Elements with Pointwise Mass Conservation
Two families of conforming finite elements for the two-dimensional Stokes problem are developed, guided by two discrete smoothed de Rham complexes, which we coin “Stokes complexes.” We show that the finite element pairs are inf-sup stable and also provide pointwise mass conservation on very general triangular meshes.
متن کاملConforming and divergence-free Stokes elements in three dimensions
Conforming finite element pairs for the three-dimensional Stokes problem on general simplicial triangulations are constructed. The pressure space simply consists of piecewise constants, where as the velocity space consists of cubic polynomials augmented with rational functions. We show the existence of a bounded Fortin projection and therefore the necessary LBB condition is satisfied. In additi...
متن کاملOutput-based Adaptive Meshing Using Triangular Cut Cells
This report presents a mesh adaptation method for higher-order (p > 1) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations of the two-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The method uses a mesh of triangular elements that are not required to conform to the boundary. This triangular, cut-cell approach permits anisotropic adaptation without the difficulty of constructing meshes that conform...
متن کاملMathematical Modeling and Analysis Mimetic Finite Differences for Modeling Stokes Flow on Polygonal Meshes
Stokes flow is fluid flow where advective inertial forces are negligibly small compared to viscous forces. This is a typical situation on a microscale or when the fluid velocity is very small. Stokes flow is a good and important approximation for a number of physical problems such as sedimentation, modeling of biosuspensions, construction of efficient fibrous filters, developing energy efficien...
متن کاملA Multigrid Method for Incompressible Flow Problems Using Quasi Divergence Free Functions
We consider a finite element method of higher order on a quadrilateral or triangular, hexahedral or tetrahedral mesh for solving the Stokes or Navier–Stokes problem by means of discontinuous elements for the pressure and suitable conforming elements for the velocity such that the global and the local inf-sup condition are satisfied. Our goal is the construction of a multigrid solver for the cor...
