چکیده
In Russian, the same consonant sequences are permitted in various phonotactic environments. The presence of a word boundary or reduced vowel can be phonologically contrastive, and both learners and experienced listeners may rely on fine acoustic cues to discriminate between phonotactic possibilities. In this study, durational characteristics of consonant sequences are examined to establish whether speakers use duration to distinguish (a) word-initial clusters (#C1C2), (b) consonant-schwa-consonant sequences (#C1əC2), and (c) sequences divided by a word boundary (C1#C2). Both monolingual native Russian speakers and bilingual RussianEnglish speakers produced several types of target sequences: stop+consonant, fricative+consonant, and nasal+consonant. Results show that C2 is significantly longer in C1#C2 than in other sequences. For #C1C2, when C1 is a stop, there is no significant difference in duration with other sequence types though C1s of other manners are significantly shorter. Differences in C1 burst duration for stops are consonant specific, but a longer interconsonantal duration is a reliable cue to schwa presence in #C1əC2. These results are discussed with respect to their implications for gestural coordination, segmentation, and language learning. Durational characteristics and timing patterns of Russian onset clusters at two speaking rates
This study presents articulatory data on the durational and timing characteristics of Russian onset clusters and their change as a function of speaking rate. While there is increasing evidence that languages differ systematically in their consonant-to-consonant timing, little is known on whether this difference also entails different implementations of speaking rate changes. Russian contrasts w...
متن کاملOn the production of sandhi phenomena in French: psycholinguistic and acoustic data
This preliminary study addresses two complementary questions about the production of sandhi phenomena in French. First, we investigated whether the encoding of enchaînement and liaison enchaînée involves a processing cost compared to non-resyllabified sequences. This question was analyzed with a psycholinguistic production time paradigm. The elicited sequences were then used to address our seco...
متن کاملArticulatory Timing in a Second Language
This study compares patterns of consonant-to-consonant timing at word boundaries in English and Russian and investigates the roles of transfer and the emergence of linguistic universals in second language (L2) articulation. Native Russian speakers learning English and native English speakers learning Russian produced phrases in English and Russian contrasting VC#CV, VC#V, and V#CV sequences. Th...
متن کاملDo different boundary types induce subtle acoustic cues to which French listeners are sensitive?
This paper examines the production of perception of three types of phonological boundaries. In the first part, we extended our previous acoustic analysis to confirm that French speakers mark word and syllables boundaries differently in enchaînement sequences. The durational properties of vowels and consonants were compared in 3 boundary conditions: (A) enchaînement (V1C#V2), (B) wordinitial con...
متن کاملWord stress and duration in Finnish
The paper summarises results of an investigation of the durational correlates of word stress in Finnish, to be reported in more detail elsewhere. It was observed that segments and syllables have a reliably longer duration when they occur within the domain of the word’s first two morae than when they occur outside this domain. The most conspicuous concomitant of primary stress is the durational ...
