Financial regulation policy uncertainty and credit spreads in the US

چکیده
This paper investigates the linear and nonlinear effects of financial regulation policy uncertainty shocks on US macroeconomic aggregates within a Vector Autoregressive (VAR) framework. Financial regulation policy uncertainty (FRPU) is quantified with a news-based index developed by Baker et al. (2013). Particular attention is paid to the reaction of corporate credit spreads to FRPU shocks. The linear VAR results suggest that exogenous increases in the FRPU index trigger increases in the cost of external finance as well as a persistent negative impact on the real economy. By using a nonlinear (Smooth-Transition) VAR model, I then show that these effects are asymmetric over the business cycle, i.e., credit spreads are estimated to rise three times more during recessions than in nonrecessionary periods. Importantly, in both the linear and nonlinear models, FRPU shocks account for large shares of the variability of unemployment and credit spreads. My findings are supported by various robustness checks. 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Uncertainty, Financial Frictions, and Irreversible Investment
Using macroand micro-level data, we establish three stylized facts: (1) fluctuations in idiosyncratic uncertainty can have a large effect on aggregate investment; (2) the impact of uncertainty on investment occurs largely through changes in credit spreads; and (3) financial shocks—identified vis-à-vis orthogonal innovations to credit spreads—have a strong effect on investment, irrespective of t...
متن کاملThe Effects of Bank Regulation on Financial Development in the MENA Countries: The Supporting Role of Supervision
T his study investigates the impact of bank regulation on financial development in the MENA countries for the period 1995-2014. Restrictions on activity, foreign banks, and capital were used as proxies for bank regulation. Also, bank supervisory power, independence, private monitoring, and moral hazard were used as proxies for bank supervision. Liquid liabilities, private credit, and...
متن کاملCapital regulation and macroeconomic activity: Implications for macroprudential policy
This paper studies the macroeconomic effect of changes in the capital requirements set by microprudential bank regulators. The central result is that unanticipated increases in capital requirements lower lending to firms and households, reduce aggregate expenditure and raise credit spreads. A financial accelerator effect is found to amplify the macroeconomic responses to shifts in bank credit s...

The aim of this article is to investigate the dynamic correlation between the Global Economic Policy Uncertainty index (GEPU) and Non-Performing Loans (NPL) in Iran. The relationship between economic uncertainty and banking performance indices is significant because of the systemic importance of banks in every economy. We evaluated this relationship in this developing country, especially under ...
متن کاملCredit risk and asymmetric information: A simplified approach
We present a simple model for risky, corporate debt. Debtholders and equityholders have incomplete information about the financial state of the debt issuing company. Information is incomplete because it is delayed for all agents, and it is asymmetrically distributed between debtholders and equityholders. We solve for the equityholders' optimal default policy and for the credit spreads required ...
