The influence of tip-sample interaction on step fluctuations on Ag (111)

چکیده
The fluctuations of the position of monatomic steps on Ag (111) are investigated by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). We analyze the influence of tip-sample interact~on by varying the gap ~mpedance over more than two orders of magnitude. For tunneling tips providing a weak tip-sample interact ion, we show that the step position au~ocorrelation function remains essentially unaltered. In this unperturbed case, the kinetlcs of step fluctuations are found to be dominated by one-dimensional mass uansport. For larger variations of tip-sample distance or for less favorable tip configurations we observe a tip-induced increase of the s ~ c p fluctuations. Ow measurements suggest that this effect is rather caused by short-range forces than by the electric field in the. tunneling gap.

Step roughness on Ag ( 111 ) investigated by STM : a systematic study of tip influence
We have investigated monatomic steps on Ag( 111) by STM at different temperatures. At room temperature, the rough appearance of these steps is usually attributed to thermal step fluctuations. We have investigated the influence of the tip systematically. Applying a new test, we demonstrate that even subtle influences can lead to wrong results in statistical analysis. متن کاملSTM-induced formation of Ag islands on Ag(111)
The formation of triangular-shaped adatom islands and vacancy islands on Ag(111) at room temperature is observed in a local growth experiment. The tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) vibrating normal to the surface leads to a local modification. Atoms are removed from flat terraces and renucleate as adatom islands. Simultaneously with the modification process the surface is imaged with...
متن کاملSingle-Atom Extraction by Scanning Tunneling Microscope Tip Crash and Nanoscale Surface Engineering
We report a novel atom extraction mechanism from the native substrate by means of a scanning tunneling microscope tip crash on a Ag(111) surface at 5 K. Individual atoms are scattered on the surface when a silver coated tip is dipped into the substrate at low tunneling biases. Quantitative analyses reveal that the mechanical energy supplied by the tip crash dominates the atom extraction process...
متن کاملInfluence of the adsorption geometry of PTCDA on Ag(111) on the tip–molecule forces in non-contact atomic force microscopy
Perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) adsorbed on a metal surface is a prototypical organic-anorganic interface. In the past, scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies of PTCDA adsorbed on Ag(111) have revealed differences in the electronic structure of the molecules depending on their adsorption geometry. In the work presented here, high-resoluti...
