Finite sample criteria for autoregressive order selection

چکیده

The quality of selected AR models depends on the true process in the finite sample practice, on the number of observations, on the estimation algorithm, and on the order selection criterion. Samples are considered to be finite if the maximum candidate model order for selection is greater than 10, where denotes the number of observations. Finite sample formulae give empirical approximations for the statistical average of the residual energy and of the squared error of prediction for several autoregressive estimation algorithms. This leads to finite sample criteria for order selection that depend on the estimation method. The special finite sample information criterion (FSIC) and combined information criterion (CIC) are necessary because of the increase of the variance of the residual energy for higher model orders that has not been accounted for in other criteria. Only the expectation of the logarithm of the residual energy, as a function of the model order, has been the basis for the previous classes of asymptotical and finite sample criteria. However, the behavior of the variance causes an undesirable tendency to select very high model orders without the special precautions of FSIC or CIC.

Finite Sample FPE and AIC Criteria for Autoregressive Model Order Selection Using Same-Realization Predictions

A new theoretical approximation for expectation of the prediction error is derived using the same-realization predictions. This approximation is derived for the case that the Least-Squares-Forward (LSF) method (the covariance method) is used for estimating the parameters of the autoregressive (AR) model. This result is used for obtaining modified versions of the AR order selection criteria FPE ...

Order selection for vector autoregressive models

Order-selection criteria for vector autoregressive (AR) modeling are discussed. The performance of an order-selection criterion is optimal if the model of the selected order is the most accurate model in the considered set of estimated models: here vector AR models. Suboptimal performance can be a result of underfit or overfit. The Akaike information criterion (AIC) is an asymptotically unbiase...

Consistent estimation and order selection for non-stationary autoregressive processes with stable innovations

A possibly non-stationary autoregressive process, of unknown finite order, with possibly infinite-variance innovations is studied. The Ordinary Least Squares autoregressive parameter estimates are shown to be consistent, and their rate of convergence, which depends on the index of stability, α, is established. We also establish consistency of lag-order selection criteria in the non-stationary c...

Finite sample effects in vector autoregressive modeling

In vector autoregressive modeling, the order selected with the Akaike Information Criterion tends to be too high. This effect is called overfit. Finite sample effects are an important cause of overfit. By incorporating finite sample effects, an order selection criterion for vector AR models can be found with an optimal trade-off of underfit and overfit. The finite sample formulae in this paper ...

New Procedure to Improve the Order Selection of Autoregressive Time Series Model

Problem statement: We propose new approach could be used to guide the selection of the “true” order of autoregressive model for different sample size. Approach: We used simulation study to compare four model selection criteria with and without the help of the new approach. The comparison of the four model selection criteria was in terms of their percentage of number of times that they identify ...
