چکیده

This study was performed in two phases of work. In the first stage, alkaline leaching of lead and zinc from an Iranian low-grade oxide ore was examined and the influence of the operating variables including stirring speed, leaching temperature, NaOH concentration and liquid to solid ratio was determined experimentally. The optimum condition was found to be NaOH concentration of 4 M, liquid to solid ratio of 20 ml/g, temperature of 80 C and a stirring speed of 500 rpm for lead and 400 rpm for zinc, in the range of investigated parameters. Under these conditions, the highest recovery of lead and zinc was obtained to be 72.15 and 85.52%, respectively. In the second stage, the dissolution kinetics of lead and zinc was evaluated by the shrinking core models. The finding reveals that diffusion through the fluid film was the leaching kinetics rate controlling step of lead and zinc. The activation energy was found to be 13.6 kJ/mol for lead and 13.92 kJ/mol for zinc. Equations representing the leaching kinetics of lead and zinc were achieved to be 1 − (1 − x)2/3 = 0.7272 × e(−13.6/(8.314×T)) × t and 1 − (1 − x)2/3 = 0.9686 × e(−13.92/(8.314×T)) × t, respectively. © 2017 Published by Elsevier Editora Ltda. on behalf of Brazilian Metallurgical, Materials and Mining Association. Kinetics of Sphalerite Leaching by Sodium Nitrate in Sulfuric Acid

In the present work, the extraction of zinc from a sphalerite concentrate using sodium nitrate as an oxidant in a sulfuric acid solution was investigated. The effective parameters such as the temperature, sulfuric acid and sodium nitrite concentrations, stirring speed, particle size, and solid/liquid (S/L) ratio were analyzed. The dissolution rate increased with increase in the sulfuric acid an...

Leaching Kinetics of Stibnite in Sodium Hydroxide

Spherical pellets of antimony sulphide were dissolved in 1 molar sodium hydroxide solutions at different temperatures. It was found that the shrinking core with ash layer model could satisfactorily explain the dissolution process. Using this model it was found that initially the rate controlling step is a chemical reaction with activation energy of 10.2 kJ/mol. As the ash layer builds up, diffu...

Investigation of leaching kinetics of zinc from a low-grade ore in organic and inorganic acids

The leaching kinetics of a low-grade zinc oxide ore in different acid media was investigated with respect to the experimental variables including acid concentration, temperature, liquid to solid (L/S) ratio, and stirring speed. The results obtained showed that the leaching reagent concentration and the reaction temperature exerted significant effects on the extraction of zinc, whereas the L/S r...

Behavior of zinc from spent zinc-carbon batteries by selective leaching with sodium hydroxide

Physical methods such as crushing and sieving followed by magnetic separation steps were applied to separate non-magnetic material (88.4 wt%) from zinc-carbon spent batteries. The oversize material was processed by eddy current separation to recover zinc sheet, carbon rods, and plastics. The undersize fraction (-2.36 mm) with a metal composition of 15.5% Zn, 17.5% Mn, and 1.4% Fe was used for t...

Effect of CO2 Partial Pressure on the Thermal Decomposition Kinetics of Zinc Carbonate Hydroxide (TECHNICAL NOTE)

In this work, the effect of carbon dioxide partial pressure on the calcination kinetics of high purity zinc carbonate hydroxide has been studied. Non-isothermal analysis has been performed on samples at different CO2 partial pressures by TGA and DTA. It has been found that the calcination behaviour of this material corresponds to the shrinking core model and the reaction mechanism is phase boun...
