Deep drilling moves ahead

چکیده
Deep-water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico could resume within weeks under a policy by the US government, which has come under increasing criticism from the oil industry and politicians in the region over the impact of the drilling halt and worries from scientists that the full impact has not yet been assessed. Oil and gas exploration in the gulf’s deep waters has been stopped since May, when Obama announced a six-month drilling moratorium in the wake of the April explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, which killed 11 workers and set off the worst off-shore oil spill in US history. The administration lifted the ban in October — a month ahead of schedule — but hasn’t issued any permits for new deep-water wells. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month that the delay has hurt both the oil industry, which has seen billions of dollars in projects put on hold, and the Gulf Coast’s economy, which has been hit hard by the slowdown. The decision has alarmed environmentalists who are still assessing the damage caused by the oil rig disaster. But a government report last month suggested that the vast majority of the oil is already gone. The Gulf has more natural oil leaks than anywhere else around the US coast and this is likely to be the reason that there are many bacteria able to metabolise oil in this region, researchers say. “Under the right conditions, bacteria can degrade spilled oil remarkably quickly,” the Washington Post reported. But many researchers are still concerned about reports of oil deposited deep on the Gulf ocean floor and the substantial damage it did to marine life and the economy of the Gulf region throughout the summer. But reports suggest the government is planning to clear the path for 13 companies, including Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron, to resume work on a handful of wells that were already approved and under way when the moratorium took effect. The companies’ 16 projects must still comply with

A Dynamic Simulation of Annular Multiphase Flow during Deep-water Horizontal Well Drilling and the Analysis of Influential Factors
A gas kick simulation model for deep-water horizontal well with diesel-based drilling fluid is presented in this paper. This model is mainly based on the mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations. The unique aspect of this model is the fluid-gas coupling and the change of mud properties after the gas influx from the formation. The simulation results show that the gas in an annulus disso...

strict new safety rules announced after the Deepwater Horizon disaster, but in most cases won't be subjected to new environmental reviews. The announcement means that some drilling could resume within weeks, although the exact timing remains unclear. But the policy doesn't affect the more than a dozen permit requests that were pending when the moratorium took effect or have been filed since. Th...
متن کاملComputer-aided process engineering in oil and gas production
As oil and gas production moves to ever more challenging areas, increased use of technology becomes increasingly important. One technology that can contribute towards achieving safe and economic production from such areas is computer-aided process engineering. We outline the use of such technology in two (of many) instances: Managed pressure drilling (MPD) for deep-offshore applications and nat...
متن کاملThe Application of Least Square Support Vector Machine as a Mathematical Algorithm for Diagnosing Drilling Effectivity in Shaly Formations
The problem of slow drilling in deep shale formations occurs worldwide causing significant expenses to the oil industry. Bit balling which is widely considered as the main cause of poor bit performance in shales, especially deep shales, is being drilled with water-based mud. Therefore, efforts have been made to develop a model to diagnose drilling effectivity. Hence, we arrived at graphical cor...
متن کاملPrediction of Wellbore Temperatures During the Scientific Ultra-Deep Drilling Process
In order to carry out a series of key basic researches, a scientific ultra-deep drilling plan is being undertaken in China. Wellbore temperature is one of the key factors during the drilling process. In this paper, we established a twodimensional transient numerical model to predict the ultra-deep wellbore temperature distributions during circulation and shut-in stages. The simulation results i...
