Thus, diastolic evaluation is an important component of the evaluation of the patient with systolic left ventricular (LV) impairment.

Prevalence of Heart Failure in the Cases of Beta-thalassemia Major; Two Years Follow-Up

Inroduction: Heart failure (HF) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the cases of Beta-thalassemia major. The purpose of this study was to estimate HF prevalence in these patients and to assess the survivability of those who were treated with intensive chelating therapy.   Design and methods: This cross sectional study included 72 beta-thalassemia major cases, the mean age at t...

Assessment of left ventricular diastolic function with cardiovascular MRI: what radiologists should know.

Diastolic dysfunction is a common entity and the predominant cause of heart failure in 40%-50% of patients. Diagnosis of diastolic dysfunction is clinically relevant and associated with a poor prognosis. The aim of this essay was to review the pathophysiology and different grades of diastolic dysfunction and to provide an overview on the role of cardiovascular magnetic resonance...

The Correlation between Left and Right Ventricular Ejection Fractions in Patients with Ischemic Heart Disease, Documented by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Introduction: The correlation between right and left ventricular ejection fractions (RVEF and LVEF, respectively) has been studied in only a small number of patients with a marked decrease in RVEF and LVEF. The aim of the present study was to compare LVEF and RVEF in patients with ischemic heart disease. RVEF and LVEF were measured by Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) imaging. Materials a...

Diastolic echo parameters: meaningless numbers or crucial information?

Assessment of diastolic function has emerged as another important contribution of echocardiography to the clinical care of patients. Diastolic dysfunction as diagnosed by echocardiography carries a negative prognostic value,1–3 and diastolic assessment is now a routine part of any complete echocardiographic report.4 Bhella et al,5 in this issue of Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, investigat...
