Cystine Deficiency and Cholesterol Metabolism in Primates
نویسنده
چکیده
• A deficiency of sulfur amino acids impairs sterol metabolism in several species.' The present work with primate species was directed at an explanation of this phenomenon. The role of dietary cholesterol in the regulation of blood cholesterol has been best documented for the rat* In that rodent, synthesis of cholesterol is reduced by the administration of dietary cholesterol. Gould et al. showed in the dog also that the presence of dietary cholesterol reduced the synthesis of cholesterol. This effect of feeding cholesterol is more readily demonstrated in vitro with liver preparations than in the whole animal. The influence of exogenous cholesterol on sterol metabolism, known as the "feed back regulation" of cholesterol level, has been extrapolated freely to the human situation. Thus it has been argued that restriction of dietary cholesterol is of little practical importance in regulating the level of serum cholesterol in human beings because of the compensating effect of changing rate of synthesis.

Choline Metabolism Iii. the Effect of Cystine, Fat, and Cholesterol on Hemorrhagic Degeneration in Young Rats By
The rBle of cholinein the prevention of hemorrhagic degeneration in young rats has been described in Paper I of this series (1). The deficiency was aggravated by dietary cystine and the toxic effects of cystine were alleviated by choline. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that methionine exhibited a choline-like action (2). The investigations of Best (3-6) and of Channon (6, 7) and their coworke...
متن کاملCholine Metabolism I. the Occurrence and Prevention of Hemorrhagic Degeneration in Young Rats on a Low Choline Diet* by Wendell
The lipotropic action of choline and of related compounds has been extensively investigated since this effect was demonstrated in rats (2, 3). These studies on the relation of choline to the protein, fat, carbohydrate, and cholesterol metabolism of the rat have recently been reviewed by Best and Ridout (4). In this series of papers, evidence is presented for a hitherto unrecognized effect of ch...
متن کاملEffect of cystine and threonine on the growth of rats receiving tryptophan-deficient rations.
A suppression of the growth rate of rats upon addition of proteins or protein hydrolysates containing little or no tryptophan to 9 per cent casein diets supplemented with cystine has been repeatedly demonstrated (l-5). This effect can be duplicated by adding 0.078 per cent threonine or 0.208 per cent phenylalanine to such diets (6). With 1.5 mg. per cent of niacin or 50 mg. per cent of tryptoph...
متن کاملA compound heterozygote case of isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency
We report an isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency in the first child boy of a non-consanguineous Caucasian family. He's a compound heterozygote for the sulfite oxidase gene, presenting low cystine, undetectable homocysteine and normal uric acid blood concentrations and undetectable sulfite oxidase activity in his cultured fibroblasts. Both mutations are not reported yet. The clinical presentatio...
متن کاملNovel role of a triglyceride-synthesizing enzyme: DGAT1 at the crossroad between triglyceride and cholesterol metabolism
Acyl-CoA:diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1) is a key enzyme in triacylglycerol (TG) biosynthesis. Here we show that genetic deficiency and pharmacological inhibition of DGAT1 in mice alters cholesterol metabolism. Cholesterol absorption, as assessed by acute cholesterol uptake, was significantly decreased in the small intestine and liver upon DGAT1 deficiency/inhibition. Ablation of DGAT1...
